I'm afraid that's where you are wrong. 'not particularly competent.' He is extremely competent ,which made him a target for those who love dirty tactics.Talking to some of his constituents last week they had nothing but high praise for him.. could that be why the Lake District will lose 40% of it's government funding next season? Punishment from the Tories.?

We have just returned from the UK. The North West to be precise, and lovely it was. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr Farron on Thursday in his Lake Distict constituency and what a very warm and personable man he turned out to be..We enjoyed a good half hours chat with him..and of course photo's.Let's just say his views are ours on most subjects. Including the sticky question of who exactly is running the country.. Government or media.?.
Media's ability to throw mud, and make it stick is resulting in us being almost ungovernable. A certain Mr Dacre has a lot to answer for. I wonder what his agenda is .apart from making a lot of money off stupid people

Ask the people in the front lines at the Miners strike in Yorkshire if they thought she deliberately set out to kill them. Starving them out and when that didn't work charging them on horseback whilst wielding batons... A tea party ..obviously

I meant he was not a competent leader! Having been a supporter of the Social Democrats--member of the Liberal Democrats when it was formed.
All the leaders have had fatal flaws (apart from Williams in the lords.)
I have stopped paying membership fees---and it was nothing to do with Brexit--it is not necessary to agree with everything the party believes!

Farron did not have the necesary gravitas for a party leader. Lamb is now unfortunately aging rapidly . Cable OK---if he manages not to say anything silly. Campbell was a laugh, Clegg unlucky (although I profoundly disagreed with his leading the LibDems to vote down the Saatchi experimental drugs Bill).
Charles Kennedy probably the best leader of all parties if/if he could only have mastered his addictions.

Because we did not get what was promised so many years ago which she had signed up to. What we now have is DUA.

What they thought is irrelevant. I was referring to her intentions... not their reactions. She didn't deliberately kill people like "Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and their like". Please try to follow the conversation.

She was one of the main architects of the Single Internal Market which we are now leaving.

Exactly I think our brexiters should read her Lancaster house speech on the subject.
She knew that putting aside her other reservations about the EU she knew that the economy mattered above everything else.
For her it was always about the economy.

Mrs Thatcher resigned in 1990, left the Commons in 1992. The EU was founded in 1993.

You obviously have not read her Lancaster house speech..
She makes a reference to the EU in her introduction.

She refers to the "European Community", many times.
"Tendency in Europe to talk in lofty tones of European Union"---not 'The' or 'A' European Union.
She talks of a single market--"doing business with 11 other countries".

Later not so keen.

Have to agree with most of that... particularly the Saatchi affair. Had heated debate on here about searching for other means of combating cancer.. unfortunately used the innocuous (to me) term 'alternative' that brought a lot of abuse out of the woodwork.. I guess Nick showed his weakness there. He could have done a lot more in coalition imo. Kennedy was a tragedy.

Don't be patronising Ian.. No one is impressed with that. Your splitting hairs and you know it. Hitler et al were judged after the events. Thatcher never was

It is only the speeches she made when in power that mattered and the views she held at that time.
Then she had influence afterwards very little..
She knew the value off the single market , unlike some in our divided government..
