All over the thread, can't be bothered to paste it. Infact it seems the only important thing is if it's cheaper...why do people go back then if it's more expensive in the UK

Seems by most posts the most important decision to stay in Spain is the fact hey can drink themselves silly on €2 plonk

Re: Would you go back to the UK ?
This one maybe.
I think if wine sells at €1.50 a litre it's because that's all they can get for it, if it were any good, they could ask €5-10 and people would pay it. It's bit like the cartons of Don Simon, it sells at €1 or whatever it is because that's all it's worth.
We used to buy our wine from the chain wine stores or the supermarkets in the UK but now we happily buy from the local bodegas and usually pay less than €1.50 per litre. To us it's equally as good as the stuff we bought in the UK and none of our guests have turned their noses up at it either

The wine in question is a 5 year old Jumilla and the reason it sells for that price is because
A) it is sold in bulk by the litre in bodegas up and down the land from large barrels.
B) it has not been bottled which would add at least €0.75 per bottle
C) it has not been labelled which would add at least €0.25 per bottle
D) it has not been transported in bottles which would add at least another €0.50
Additionally, any wine bought from a supermarket in UK with a price tag of less than £6.00 contains wine that cost around 60p per litre. That information was passed on by a well known vintner in Yorkshire.
So get off your high horse and actually talk about something within your sphere of knowledge, if such a thing exists.

Those costs are outrageous, .75 for a empty bottle a .25 for a sticky label, I can not comment on the cost of a bottle but a label would not cost more than a penny and transport the same

Not really Andy, A friend of mine was looking at setting up a business in home-made preserves etc and a typical jam jar was about 60p a while ago. So much for recycling eh.

Re: Would you go back to the UK ?
Here and with your approval I will briefly take this off track. We still have a house and grandchildren et al in the UK and nothing bar nothing will make us sell. It is there and has been for years as a bolthole.
However we have come from France to Spain and to ask the same question in a differing way would we go back to France. Yes is the answer most certainly and there are numerous grounds but the Health service in France after so many years there is superior to our experience in Spain. Stand up arguments at the Salud in Javea (not ours) filled us with dread.
Then finally at the Parador meeting earlier this year I had an admission from Blevin Franks that taxation in France is less than in Spain. In our case it is quite a difference so we are watching 183 days!
But I could be convinced to stay here and enjoy what Spain does have to offer if the rental of our villa and which has been an unmitigated disaster with a leak that we were not informed of before we came and now 1300 euros later. The house is like a bog in Southern Ireland.
We pay a substantial amount for rent and the landlord could not care less.
So if someone wants to rent a villa then please let me know!
Sorry to go off track perhaps I should have started another thread?

Well you could have fooled me. Hardly ever seen a prosperous looking pensioner in Spain. They hang around the streets with nothing to do, the women in their pinafore dresses from the market In the UK the country Inns and restaurants are full of well-dressed pensioners having lunch, they also join golf clubs, go to the theatre. Holidays are cruises etc. Infact they re all over the place!
They get the best treatment at the restaurants and shops because everyone knows that the pensioners have the most money
As I've said before, some pensioners receive 7k per month just in state pension and then private pensions on top
In the South it is a different matter because so many people worked illegally 40 years ago (and still do) and women very often did not work, or only worked on the land. But get away from the South the the situation is very different

Only a wine snob who actually knows nothing about wine and only buys it according to price would make such a crass statement.

This leaves just 62 pence to pay for the wine, the glass bottles, the labels, the cardboard box, the transport from country of origin and UK transport.

Not in the North, they all waltz around with their fur coats on up here
They get the best treatment at the restaurants and shops because everyone knows that the pensioners have the most money

Never seen the Spanish buy the cheapest wine except to dilute with Casera. Can't see how bottles and jam jars cost the producer much. They sell curry sauce etc in jam jar sizes at Sainsbury for 50 pence!
Just add one thing re. tax. Does make a big difference, tax is lower in the UK and it's a big difference for some.
