Default working in gibralter / living in spain

Hi all...
newbie here so please be gentle!

So end of this month I am moving to Spain, as my company are setting up a branch on Gibraltar.
Now I would prefer to live on gibralter, purely to save on travel and border crossings, but rents there seem very high and no properties actually available. So in this case i will probably live on the Spanish side and cross over daily...hence few questions if you can help (sorry most of these are probably repeats from other threads!)

1: I wont be driving whilst there and was looking at somewhere in walking distance or bus ride to the border.
I have looked at La Linea, but quite a few forum posts say its not very safe there, has this changed at all? any other suggestions of areas to rent

2: I will be getting paid in sterling into my natwest account, so can spend sterling in Gib, but any suggestions on how to pay rent in euros?

3: I will obviously try to learn spanish, but in the meantime can i survive using just english?

4: what is the rental procedure in spain? is it quite easy? agent or direct landlord?

thanks in advance for any replies
