VOIP telephones
I'm somewhat confused (very!) by these phones. I currently have wireless internet delivered to my home via a small outside dish and a standard landline connected to a normal cordless telephone. If I have the landline disconnected, can I buy another cordless phone which will use my internal wi-fi system to connect with my internet service and therefore allow me to make calls as I do now?
If the answer is yes, what product(s) should I be searching for?
Thanks.

Re: VOIP telephones
We use Siemens Gigaset IP DECT phones.
What I like about them is that there is a single base station which you connect to your router, and the handsets are stand-alone - you just buy more handsets to extend the system. The phones are good quality, have fantastic range (even through concrete) and don't interfere with WIFI performance. The sound quality is outstanding.
The base station allows you to connect both your landline and internet accounts. You can manage how it handles incoming and outgoing calls to/from each handset through a simple web interface. You can also call to other handsets separately from the phone system.

Re: VOIP telephones
You can use a mobile phone via wifi using a box called a femto cell. Must be Provided by your mobile provider if they do them, fairly cheap as they will then charge you for your mobile calls as normal though they are travelling via YOUR FUNDED wifi.
Proper voip telephones are actually generic devices but total b'stards to configure. If you use voip, you have to pay someone to gateway it to the normal [pstn] glibal phone network. Smarter operators have lots of gateways all over the world thus mak8ng your calls very cheap.
Sanity for the phones [or you can use your old phone and have a little box which is a gateway itself] lies in having it provisioned [managed and configured] by your voip provider.
People like skype do their own phones, but they arent quite normal voip, to keep you paying their ridiculous [for voip] charges. Look at someone like voipfone.co.uk, ive used them all over the world for years. They provide and manage the hardware, i pay a few pounds a month to keep my london number which physically moves with me wherever i am on wifi. My mobile uses a voip client, my home phones here are are effectively the same number.
Total cost less than 5 pounds a month including lots of calls around the world.

Re: VOIP telephones
Thanks for the replies. Appreciated. Yes, our mobile phone would be an obvious solution, but not in the habit of having it with us to us wherever we are and have got used to having a "normal" looking phone in the lounge. With such a home phone we just switch our mobiles off in the evening. Perhaps I need to learn to move on from this archaic habit!
Thanks again to all.

Re: VOIP telephones
The issue for many is that whatsapp or facebook messenger or apple facetime are closed ecosystems. Fine for lots of things till you need to call someone or your bank or ?? with a real phone no, at which point a voip phone is the easiest and cheapest solution.
