I seem to recall that the right-hand AltGr key (to the right of the space bar) is used to access some symbols like the @ character. Try typing AltGr and the 2 key at the same time. Does the 2 key have an @ sign on it (next to the 2, not above it)?

Somewhere buried in the user settings is the option to change the "nationality" of the keyboard. Obviously it doesn't change the keys, but it will switch the "meaning" of the keys to what your used to. Even the UK and US have slightly different keyboards, with the @ and : swapped and the US layout has a # where the £ is on a British layout keyboard.

You don't really need that symbol anymore. Unless you're a greengrocer.

I have pinned to the wall a copy of a Spanish keyboard which I printed from this website:
commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KB

The @ symbol is 3rd from the left top row.

Also for a € sign use Alt-Gr and "E"
| is Alt-Gr and "1"
# is Alt-Gr and "3"
~ is Alt-GR and "4"
¬ is Alt-GR and "6"
