Once you are self-employed and are making your SS payments, then the whole family is covered.

SS payments in Spain are NOT based on earnings - they are a fixed figure based on your age, the job you're doing and maybe other factors.

Anyway, it's about 260€ per month - even if you earn nothing.

At the moment there is a scheme to pay less as a new self-employed person - google it to find details or do a search on this forum.

I thought that was only for people that had been drawing unemployment benefit, not for startups.

it's for start-ups as well - I know several people who have not long lived here who have taken advantage of it

as long as you have either not been employed, or have not been registered as autónomo in the last 5 years you qualify, iirc

That sounds good - at least they are trying to do something about the situation.

Expecting the full contribution from day one is hardly going to encourage anyone to be self employed!

As good, if not better than in UK.

Just remember you won't get nursing care apart from treatments and medication, or aftercare. Your family will be expected to do this, or you have to pay someone
You may not get the physiotherapy you would normally expect after certain operations.you will pay for any equipment eg crutches, yourself
You will pay a proportion of the cost towards prescriptions
