I don't quite follow. My terrace has no roof but four walls one of which is made up of totally opening sliding windows. As it has no roof, will it be an allowed smoking area? Does it mean, for instance that a patio with no roof is OK?

I would think that a roof would be part of the minimum requirement, but something worth confirming with the relevant authorities

I was surprised when the first ban came into force how well it was complied with especially in work places. When we first came over and went into the bank we couldn´t believe that the cashiers were smoking and also in the notary etc. Malaga airport used to be a nightmare with the fug but now it is great. People used to smoke on planes but now nobody thinks twice about not being allowed to.

I have stayed at French hotels many times and surprised at the amount of cig butt ends laying on the ground below the hotel rooms!
Both, by whatever type of Law Enforcer that arrives.
That's true if the windows can be opened! A hotel we were in was evacuated one winter night because some one's smoke set off the fire alarm - we were not amused...

I might be proved wrong, but I don't forsee that many places breaking the law. There'll probably be the odd protest to start with, but after a few fines things will settle down. There are a lot more non smokers than smokers, they only need to report a few places, the message will get through. Just reading that you can shop any establishment here, so it can even be anonymous as far as the bar is concerned.

I have been down into the village plaza this morning to see the falconry display that is part of the Fiesta. Stuck my head into two bars. In one there were about ten people, including children, one person was smoking. The other bar had no customers.

Somebody said our village had had a 'postponement' because of the Fiesta starting today. I don't imagine this is true.

Too early to say yet, but if this 'postponement' is not in place, one bar at least in our village has already broken the law.

I had a nice smoke-free coffee in a large English bar earlier. I don’t usually go in there because it was always packed full of smokers.

I got excellent service from the owner and two barmaids, possibly because I was the only customer.

The Spanish bar a couple of doors away was packed, the large terrace was full of smokers. I couldn’t see inside because of the smoke.

It seems to be largely ignored here so far. Guardia Civil still smoking indoors according to a bar owner here (though why he didn't ask them to put their ciggies out I don't know)... although haven't seen any Local Police doing it.

But because the weather is warm all year round here, many places have terraces that fit the criteria.

I'm a smoker and prefer to sit outside anyway.

I'm old enough to remember when the Madrid metro outlawed smoking. People then (as now) said that the Spanish would not obey the rules. I admit it took a time before everyone got the message, but eventually it happened. Since the penalties are so much greater now I suspect within weeks you'll find 99.9% compliance/

I've just done a quick tour of the village - 6 bars (out of about 16) half in each so about three pints so far...

5 bars - nobody smoking inside and no problem. One of these had about 10 people outside smoking on the narrow pavement - but the weather's quite nice so that's about normal.

One bar - the landlord served one customer who was openly smoking at the bar. Another customer said he couldn't do that and went outside with him to light up, only to come back in chatting two minutes later, fag in hand.

I still say it will work.
