Roaming charges within the EU effectively ceased from June. I made some phone calls from Spain using my Spanish mobile to my UK bank. I have been charged €18 when I queried it I was told calls to landlines didn't apply and I have been charged for international calls. I can't find anything that says this on the web. Also if someone calls me from the UK on a landline will I be charged?

Well you were not 'roaming' you were making an international call. This from the EU site

....'From now on, citizens who travel within the EU will be able to call, text and connect on their mobile devices at the same price as they pay at home. Eliminating roaming charges is one of the greatest and most tangible successes of the EU.'

Ironically if you made those calls when you are in the UK I assume basic charges apply!

Movistar now also charge for SMS (ok so we all use Whatsapp for free)

Obviously they need to recoup the loss of revenue caused by no more roaming charges.

I don't know about the calls to you charges. Sounds like time to visit a Movistar shop for an explanation.

Don't understand how a UK contract supplies Spanish mobile/landline/ADSL....??

Free calls on whatsapp and assume Skype is still competitive or free with computer-computer calls.

We were using UK mobile ( talk mobile payg) for all calls from Spain to UK, ( 4pence per minute) and they were cheaper than our Spainsh land line or Spanish mobile, We were infrormed in june this year that this service would be discontinued from 1st august . Obviously another result of the abolishment of roaming charges.

Most UK mobile providers will cap your usage from overseas under their 'fair usage' terms which will generally allow between one and two months continuous usage overseas (inc the EU). They argue that the elimination of roaming charges was never intended to allow customers to sign a mobile contract in one country and then use the phone anywhere they please - but rather to allow customers to use their phones for extended periods such as holidays and business trips etc. So much for EU directives then.

It wouldn't. But just getting a contract for a U.K. Mobile and dumping the landline and mobile.

Can't see how they could do this, on a payg mobile. It was registered to my daughters address and topped up using my UK bank card. Never any problem when they were charging £1.40 per minute, nor when they reduced it to 55p per min. Only when they had to reduce it to same price as UK call rate, 4p per min, and our family could call us at their uk rate. This apparently they did not like. Seems if they can't rip you off, they will turn you off.

The changes to the roaming charges simply mean you are charged as if you were at home, so if you have a Spanish mobile and you are in the UK and you dial a UK number you will be charged for an international call as you would be at home, if you call a Spanish number on your spanish mobile in the UK you will be charged as if you were in Spain

Movistar upgraded my contract today to include unlimited calls on my mobile (was limited to 200 mins) but excludes international.

I am roaming at the moment and everytime I change operator I get a price breakdown

Outgoing calls within the EEA 16p,min

Therefore Gib is in the EEA and calls should cost no more than16p/min to the UK

However from Gibtelecoms website it would appear they might be as high as 30p/min confusing?

If I make a call to a number outside the EEA the cost is £5.90/min

Different question, but relevant enough not to start a new thread...

I am using Lebara Pay as You Go - non-contract, and I need to use roaming. If I follow instructions from the lebara.es website, I simply get a message saying 'this service is not available'. I want to keep my Spanish number to receive calls in Portugal. Does anyone here use a Spanish service provider without contract who still provide roaming?

A contract is not an option. I need a pre-pay SIM that I can transfer my number to and receive calls in Portugal to my existing Spanish number.

Some UK contracts state that after 60 days they can start charging roaming fees again - be careful and read the small print.
