Majorca markets
Hi everyone
Has anyone ever left the uk to start trading on markets in Majorca? I’ve been a Market trader in the uk for 30 years selling ladies & gents ex chain store clothing, the British weather has a huge part to play in How well you do & winters are becoming extremely difficult as shoppers have so many more options rather than visiting an outside market. I’ve visited Majorca numerous times & love the climate and the island is beautiful, add that to a 2.5 hour flight from the uk makes it very appealing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The key thing, I think, is that you can obtain your products inexpensively. There's tons of competition.
Secondly (or maybe firstly) as all things here seem to boil down to... Language. If you only speak English, you'll have a serious handicap. Spanish is really important, German would be your best second. English third (unless you restrict your sales to markets in the handful of English tourist enclaves in high season).
But if you have the supply chains established at low costs, you can always work with someone who speaks the languages. But there's a cost for that too.
Mallorca is a lovely place to live, but you'll need a few years to find your zen.
Good luck with everything...

I'll admit up front that I've never been a seller at the markets. I do shop (and buy) at them though.

Think I’ll have to do lots of research if that’s the route I want to take, maybe a career change might be a better option!
Thanks

I don't know. I know there's lots of clothing. And it's (often, not always) sold cheap. And a lot of stuff similar to what you find in "chain stores". But there's also a lot of handcrafted and "modified" things. Like for example, off the shelf cardigans with unique embroidery or something...

Unless the markets there are different to ones we had when I was in Spain then it was extremely difficult for non Spanish people to get the license for a stall, unless you know people in the town hall.

Yes I was going to post the same comment as mikelincs, that is probably your biggest problem. Although these might seem a free for all the policia local visit every stall to check the licence etc. So you need to do a lot of research. Good luck
