In fairness, Google Translate has improved a lot since I first started using it 6-7 years ago. What they find difficult to do is to get the gender right, such as 'Maria says he bought strawberries', as the phrase 'he bought' and 'she bought' are written the same. Of course the context suggests Maria is female so must be she bought, but they haven't quite mastered it. They are getting better with idiomatic phrases and expressions.

It's horses for courses. I joined a Spanish car forum. The language used was obviously colloquial and trendy - Google had a fit! On the other hand, translating a 30 page legal document in Spanish is brilliant. Translating from English to Spanish is easy if you use short sentences, unambiguous words and stick to basic tenses. If in doubt, translate the translation via a few other languages and back into English and see if comes back the same - it's a sort of "Chineses Whispers" approach!

The problem is that no one and no where does anyone use basic unambiguous language. It is always contextual- which is why Google translate is not very good. Translate a Spanish newspaper article- all you get that is useful might be some facts the rest is usually nonsense. That is why you get Jenni Beautiful- it can't contextualise.

Very slightly off topic: Rubiales today was like watching Trump. First of all he wants to portray himself as the victim. Secondly, he appears incredibly stupid ( I mean intellectually struggles to understand what this is about within the context of behaviour). Thirdly, he now says that he actually asked Hermoso if it was alright to kiss her and she said Yes!. It was amazing TV to watch. Then he said he had begun legal proceedings against various government ministers ( not Gamara of PP though). No one is publicly supporting him unless you count the Spanish men"s trainer who seems equally stupid as his argument is that Rubiales is a great guy!! The thing is this really shines a light on the issue of machista in spain. Many men like Rubiales just don't get it. It is not about intentions it's about behaviour. The fact that you are overcome with happiness does not give you right to kiss the nearest woman to you. Also men like Rubiales don't understand is that grabbing your crotch is a male display of aggression and , god knows what he was thinking, doing it next to the young princess. Now the big big thing about today's actions was that quite a number of people can be seen clapping and then standing up to applaud. This is super embarrassing for spain. Are they so stupid? Rubiales is an out right idiot who should recognise that he can't behave as he did and should have resigned. These people are applauding a man who called his critics d.....heads a couple of days ago and now talks openly of "false feminism " . Honestly this is embarrassing!

Getting worse and worse. Early this evening the women's team effectively said they will not put on the Spanish colours until Rubiales is dismissed. It’s not so much whether the allegation was found to be true it’s the behaviour in general that leads to the allegation that is often the downfall. It’s happened on more than one occasion in football and rugby ….. whether it’s criminal often doesn’t matter it’s the behaviour of so called role models that is appalling.

Now the Spanish football federation have issued a threat of legal action against Hermoso and told the women their are under an obligation to play for Spain!!. What is going on? This is putting spain in such a bad light internationally.
