Default Finding Apartment/Duplex to rent in Gran Canaria - advice please

OK my wife and I are finally doing it! Moving that is!!

We are looking for somwhere to rent initially in Gran Canaria Puerto Rico area where we can get by with english while learning to speak Spanish properly.

We are planning to travel to GC in September soon as the school holidays end (and prices become reasonable!) for a two week holiday come property viewing break

Hopefully we will find the right property for us and then intend to rent from the start of November initially 6 months, returning to UK for xmas/new year for a couple weeks.

Obviously we have been googling to look for properties to rent as we have no idea how else to look

If anyone could advise some better strategy then that would be welcome. Looking for a 2 bed apartment/duplex (as we don't like to live in too cramped a space) preferably with sea views abd a private balcony big enough to dine on. Communal pool nice but not necessary and don't need garage space. Googling seems to find agencies with this sort of property around 700-800 Euro per month, or maybe it is better to go 'direct' or just visit some estate agents when we get there??

Thanks
Julie & Rich

Better face to face with an agent. Puerto Rico will be expensive, far cheaper away from the tourist areas, but you probably know that already. Have you thought of Facebook? lots of pages there for G.C. there.

You are doing the right thing renting, our first choice was G.C. and we ended up 200 odd miles to the west on the Meridian Isle, still return to G.C. Las Palmas, for Christmas and New Year though, only a 50 minute flight from here.

Best of luck, Boseley

Thanks
Yes we know the touristy areas are gonna cost more but it's kinda like an acclimatisation thing for us so we would rather start off where we are more familiar. Learning Spanish is a big priority for us though, so we may not stay in those areas after maybe a year. Also considering Playa Del Ingles (we like the naturist beach there amongst other reasons, including the fact it seems more 'Spanish') Than Puerto Rico.

Not had a look at Arguineguin but there seems to be quite a bit of property for rental there too so perhaps we should look.

Sonnenland seems to be in the middle of nowhere by our impressions (never actually been there though, just been past it)

We are not keen on Faro/Maspalomas area - seems too quiet for us and places seem to close early (thought the Spanish always eat late, a custom we like to embrace ourselves but this did not seem to be the case in that area!)

Same for Puerta Mogan - Lovely place and we spent several days there on one of our trips last year, but the restaurants were all shutting at 10pm (though the late night watering holes on the little 'bar street' were friendly and fun)

I hope this is sufficiently on topic but some places offer water/electricity, often 'up to 50 euro per month' in the rental price - what does that equate to in real terms?

We found one or two properties with fast broadband installed - we would need this for our IPTV box and also I do some Forex Day Trading which is a nice way to make some money if you have some experience and the nerve to do it lol. How would we go about getting a broadband connection if this was not already included? This is very important to us.

Heavens we seem to have a lot of questions at the moment - Having spent many holidays in GC (and visited all four of the main Canary Islands for that matter) we are of the opinion that we probably would not need a car if we stayed in the tourist areas as the public transport is cheap enough and seems to be reliable - though they don't seem to have mastered the art of queing to get on the bus!!! If we really don't need to run a car (which we probably would have to if we lived in the outlying areas) does this not go a fair way to offsetting the higher property rents?

We have facebook but not looked for GC pages - any particularly useful ones that you could suggest for a starting point? Facebook is a big place!

Last one - we will visit GC again for a couple weeks from 10th Sept - not booked hotels yet so thinking of maybe splitting our stay between Puerto Rico and Playa Del Ingles while looking for apartments. Can someone recommend any reputable agents in either area to meet face-to-face or to contact prior to our visit with the intention of planning some viewing days.

Thanks
