Eye treatment - Spanish health system

I am a pensioner with a SIP card. In addition to the normal health care, does it also include treatment for eye/vision problems and possible referral to an optometrist or would I have to visit one myself as a private patient?
Thanks.

Yes it does include eye care from specialists if needs be.

Thanks for that much appreciated. Could you or someone briefly outline how it works with regard to eyes? Does the doctor refer me to a specialist and if so does any recommendation for glasses include a prescription I can take to an optician and have lenses made, all within the health system?
Thanks.

My reply was referring to an eye problem "ie" cataracts etc.
Eye problems will of course normally be picked up by your optician (that you pay for) and should they detect an eye "problem" will ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist, that (and any treatment) will be covered by the health system.

Not sure where you live but on the Costa del Sol an excellent Specsavers in Marbella does free comprehensive tests and recommended an optometrist for a cataract - obviously in that case when privately.

I don't think the SS cover glasses except for children

Thanks for the replies. Have been to a private opticians before but as I've only just used my SIP card in past month although I've had it a few years, trying to get to grips with what is covers and how it works in practice. Still have private insurance for my wife and myself.

BY LAW, all eye tests are free in Spain.

We go to Direkt Optik in Moraira - cheaper than specsavers

I did not know that. :goodpost:
When it comes to eye care, I am more concerned with quality than price. I can confirm the service I received at Specsavers was very good.
