Expat car insurance?
We are back in Spain for 3 months, and FINALLY picking up our car tomorrow - fingers still crossed but at least we've now seen it at the dealers, with Spanish plates and ITV.
Now for insurance. We made enquiries last October (when we actually bought and PAID for the car!) of companies advertising expat insurance and got two quotes: both very similar and about 3 times what we pay for our car in England, being a pair of retired old farts with max ncb between us. Obviously we want to be sure we'll be able to deal with a claim should the need arise. (We were knocked off our motorbike in La Linea 3 years ago, the communications we received were total gobbledegook even using google translate and with some legal knowledge, the damage wasn't worth the cost of engaging a translator so we just forgot about it).
Any tips or advice gratefully received.

We have used MAPFRE for house and car insurance, for years, no problems whatsoever, we do speak both English and Spanish.

One never knows how good insurer is until you need to make a claim. I have had excellent service at reasonable rate from Linea Directa

I have been with Linea Directa for 17 years and have had nothing but exemplary service. I have had a few claims and they have been handled brilliantly.
They have a dedicated English speaking contact number and all communications and policy documents are in English.
I could not recommend them more highly.

We have a policy from Liberty Seguros that's in English or you can have the Spanish version, never needed to use them yet but happy so far and not a huge increase at renewal ,in fact hasn't gone up yet

Many thanks! We obtained quotes from your suggestions, and have gone with Liberty Seguros. EXCELLENT customer service, which rather makes up for the zero customer service experienced from the dealership.
As our son might say, this forum rocks !

Are you still looking? We bought a left hand drive car in England and therefore bought English insurance. Looking at the date, this is probably a moot point now, but let me know.

No, no longer looking: as mentioned we went with Liberty Seguros. BUT (in case anyone should be browsing for info in the future) having commented on the cost, it occurred to me after that the policy includes breakdown cover, so in fact the cost is not much different from what we pay at home for separate insurance and breakdown.

Been using Liberty Seguros for the last eight years for home and car(s) we have hit them for three claims on the house, structural damage in high winds all paid no question, and twice used the breakdown service which was exemplary including limo to the car hire in central Malaga and a Golf for a month. I recommend them to anyone.

Re: Expat car insurance?
Is car insurance more expensive in Spain, generally, than the UK? I live in Liverpool so we have high premiums anyway, but I have 10 years no claims and pay £36 a month on a 2014 2L petrol Mazda 3. Just trying to weigh up all costs before I dive in to a move to Spain, looking around Torrevieja, Alicante area.

Re: Expat car insurance?
I have a RAV4 2.0 vvti which runs out about the same as your Mazda3.
Our VW Touran 2.0d DSG is 20€ pcm which I consider cheap.
Both with Liberty Securos.
I have as much NCD as you want, 50 years with no claim !

Re: Expat car insurance?
When Liberty Seguros quoted us 400 euros for fully comp on an old Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero, our eyebrows shot up, but it was comparable with other quotes. However we hadn't initially realised that it includes breakdown cover.
For a Skoda Superb in the UK we pay approx £200 for the insurance and £180 for the breakdown cover. The bonus in Spain is that it is the car that's insured, not the drivers, so our children and other visitors (min 24 yrs old with 2 yrs full licence) can drive the Shogun on the same cover, whereas in the UK they'd be TP only via their own insurance.
