Default Dog prescriptions

Hi, does anyone know if I can use a UK vet prescription in Spain ( it is written under the cascade' which means I can use it in a human pharmacy in the UK). It is for a human drug but has been prescribed for my dog.
Thanks.

You should have no problems at all. Spanish pharmacies are much more liberal with drugs than in the UK.

Hi, thank you so much Fred for your reply. I am hoping that the pharmacies will let me get the medication from them although it is for my pet.

I have just been in touch with a pharmacy in Spain and they have said that I would need a Spanish vet prescription to get the medication. Has anyone ever used a UK vet prescription at a human pharmacy before in Spain?
Thanks.

Simplest solution is if you can't bring the drugs with you. Go to a vets where ever you are staying with your prescription & pet, & ask them to write you one in Spanish. The pharmacy may not have the same drugs anyway so the vet will tell you the alternative.

I just wanted to know if I could bring the prescription over and get the medication and then bring it back to the UK. The reason for this is that the medication in the UK used to cost me £32.00 for 360 tablets. The original drug has stopped been manufactured and therefore, a generic version has been introduced. This version is more or less the same as the original, but the costs have risen and now just for 200 tablets it has gone to £275.

My dog has to take 14 tablets a day which is 100 tablets per week. The cost for a months supply is going to be £550 per month.
In Spain it has remained the same price as it was here previously. So if it was possible to use a UK prescription in Spain it would be far cheaper for a flight over to get the meds than purchase them here.

It is possible that what you are planning to do is illegal so best to check with Customs and Excise before taking action.

I have already checked with the excise and customs here in the UK yesterday and it is okay to do this as it is not a controlled drug. I checked this before I posted my message yesterday. It is fine as long as it is only 3 months supply of meds that I bring through.
Thanks though Rosemary as I know not everyone would think to check if this was a legal thing to do.

So glad that you have already checked because the last thing you need is that sort of spanner in the works.

Some Farmacias are more helpful than others. I have found some will supply replacement if I present the old packet, whilst others will not without prescription.

As is not unusual here it can be down to the individual, I have twice now had a vet's prescription for antibiotics for our dogs, for one the prescription was retained and for the other the prescription was returned intact for reuse if I wished, different people.
Things like eye drops do not need a prescription.

Thank you all for the advice. I have contacted a few more and waiting to hear from them. It may be that because the prescription is from the UK that they are not able to do this! I know that I have brought a prescription over before from the UK and had no problem getting the meds. Maybe because this is for dog things are done differently?
I will just have to see what if any of the other pharmacies reply.
It is just unbelievable how much the medication has increased in the UK. I think I may have to speak to her specialist and see if he may be able to obtain it someway.
