When
I compare the uk capital with Madrid cost wise then Madrid wins hands down.
Don't worry I doubt I will frequent the 40 cent chains, plenty of traditional bars that serve a beer for just over a pound. Of course that is not the only cost. Internet access will be a shade more expensive no doubt.
But overall the things I either need, or the odd beer or coffee in a bar, will all be a lot cheaper. And of course heating will probably be a similar cost. Will it always be that way? No one can say for sure. Vamos a ver..
I paid €23 for a baileys in Madrid, but in a Lizzaran bar down the road only €1 for a doble so, I guess like any city !

The funny thing is Amstel in Spain tastes to me better than Spanish brewed Heinie, anywhere else Amstel would not get a look in !
I sell about 6 kegs of Amstel a week at £3.60 a pint. Second only to Fosters.

I prefer Amstel over Heineken and Fosters.

Anything is better than fosters, but for me Dutch brewed Heine cant be beaten, if your in UK then I **think** that Amstel is UK Brewed under licence, each to there own, Amstel is now reduced to 4% in UK prolly to attract that market that gets Carlsberg/Carling/Fosters/San MIguel/ Stella 4 etc and yes for me it would be my first choice if no premium lager was available

If your in Spain then yes Amstel is better mate I agree, but never better than import Heineken

I used to frequent a bar in Tenerife which was always busy because of it's popular entertainment.
The beer from the pumps was never good but began to get worse and worse with most customers complaining and saying it wasn't fit to drink.
I asked the Spanish bar manager one night how often he cleaned out the lines.
He hadn't the faintest idea what I was talking about and seemed totally unaware that it should be normal practice on a regular basis.

Line cleaning in Spain is usually the responsibility of the Beer supplier, its in the Contract to supply.

That is a pertinent point. If I were to order a beer in the Plaza Mayor, or indeed take a tea at the Ritz, I'd be stung...
A tip here for any visitors to London who fancy a cream tea in the afternoon. Many places offer this for around £20 to £25 and it's possible to pay far more in the plush hotels - however if you search out a "patisserie valerie" they offer a cream tea for two for around £8.

Most tourists don't want to go for the cheapest, they want trendy or well known places/areas. Eating on the Champs élysées etc. In Puerto Banus people sit in the News Café or Sinatras and pay €6 for a beer but around the corner the same beer is €2 but it is next to a garage. In London they want tea at the Ritz and it is booked up for months at £75 pp!

Depends on the tourist. There is no shortage of (particularly British) tourists that pick the cheapest thing they can find on the internet - usually some cheap all-in deal - and then complain incessantly about how crappy it is, and all the things that aren't included in their cheap all-in deal. Others are perfectly happy with a 20 sq. mtr. concrete block room, a bed and a toilet as long as the beer is "free".

Ironically, their cheap all-in deals often end up costing far more than if they'd just booked a nice resort or taken an apartment self catering ...

Penny wise, pound foolish.

Apparently the craft beer movement is gaining followers in Madrid.

I'm quite happy with a canya of Mahou or Cruzcampo in a local bar, but I have to admit if I want a Guinness or German wheat beer then it'll cost just as much as in a London pub.

Are there even home brew shops in Costa Blanca or in Spain for that matter?

Personally, I like Estrella.

Yes Estrella I like, Alhambra is rank (to me), I am one of those people that would pay more for better or simply go without, I don't mind San miguel in those tiny 250ml bottles when they are Ice cold though, 2 sips and its gone, lol.

I really fancy a beer now, I suffer from tendonitis and I have a real bad bout of it at the moment !
