That is technically true for those wishing to naturalise as Spanish citizens but since your 'renunciation' of your previous citizenship invariably has no legal effect dual nationality is permitted for all practical purposes.

I'm also interested in applying for Spanish nationality. I've done all the exams that they now ask for but I've held back on actually sending the application away purely because I don't want to lose my British nationality. This thread is reassuring as it seems that I would not have to do that.

Now what is holding my back is that the application form says I have to send away all my ORIGINAL documents which I really don't like doing, but I read somewhere above that one person made an appointment and went to the local court house.

Any idea if it can still be done that way at the local court house? and could I leave my GB passport at home and just take photocopies because I really don't fancy handing over my GB passport.

Thanks!

My application was dealt with by the Court Office near to where we live, every page of our passports were photo-copied and the original was returned to us straight away. Birth certificates, certified and translated, had to sent away by the court office.

At no time during the process were we asked to surrender our passports, probably due to the fact that to travel inter island, identification is mandatory and in those days passport was our only recourse. now we have D.N.I. cards.

OK, thanks. I'll give it a try. Fingers crossed!
