Default Young Brit moving to Singapore!

Hi

I'm moving to Singpore to start a new job as an OTC energy broker but I don't know anyone there!! I'm a sociable young 23 year old gal who likes clubbing, music, meeting new people, dinning etc.. I have absolutely no idea what the social scene is like in Singapore so if you can give me any feedback it would be most appreciated.

thks x x

I wouldn't worry about it - sounds like you'll fit right in. Shame you're going to be an energy broker cos those guys never party or go to bars or nightclubs, do they............ .

I went there from London as a transfer with an energy trading company, I was single and 30 and it was a lot of fun - I had a much better social life than I had in London, although you will have to get used to the fact that your friends are likely to rotate out on 2-3 year cycles. Its 5 years since I left, so I'm not going to try to advise on where's good - the pace of development/change in Singapre is very rapid. No doubt someone more recent/lcoal will come along soon.

You'll probably hit a LOT of business entertaining as well - just one thing - be prepared for some pretty chauvinistic treatment on nights out - it will not be uncommon to find some (probably quite a lot, particularly the locals) of the guys sloping off for some 'relaxation' in the form of hostess karaoke, "massages" etc and surprise surprise, you may not be invited (unless they're looking for you to pick up the tab....). You aint gonna change it, even in squeaky clean singapore, so develop a thick skin and take the pi$$ and you'll be fine.!

Have fun - its a great place to spend a few years.

Hi Flick

You'll have a great social life in Singapore - too good for your liver, perhaps! However it can take some time to build up a social crowd so you have to swallow your pride and invite yourself along to everything you hear about. Most of us have been through it and you will be welcomed.

Forums are a great way to do this - the one I run may be a bit old for you (we'd welcome you but you may find us ancient - mostly 30s and 40s although we still think we're 20) but there is one here www.singaporeexpats.com that I know has a lot of younger expats and locals on and they arrange quite a few nights out - drinking, dining, dancing, movies, etc., plus sports too - inline skating, wakeboarding, volleyball at Sentosa, you name it. Also look out for the WNDC and FNDC (Wednesday and Friday Night Drinking Clubs).

Singapore nightlife has come along immensely in the 5 years I've been here. Clarke Quay in particular has been renovated - terribly, it's an eyesore! but I have to admit it has totally regenerated it. We've even got a Ministry of Sound now and both that and Zouk get a lot of international DJs.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you've any questions on this or anything else to do with Singapore. We've all been newbies, and we like to help others out as much as people helped us out.

(Another Yorkie abroad LOL )

You will love it - what a great experience to be moving to Singapore at such a young age. Also take a look at expatsingapore.com - a lot of good info on there (and a lot of expat whingers too - but there's a lot of that in Singapore).

Hey,

I'm kind of in the same situation as Flick, 23 year old male, just graduated and starting work in Singapore next week. Unfortunately, I'm an Engineer and so have absolutely no comprehension of what a social life is . I was wondering, as a younger person, if it is worth joining the British Club or not? All of the pictures on the web site are either of families or older persons – not that there is anything wrong with that of course, but it would be great to meet some similarly aged expats as well.

Thanks

Even engineers partied at University right? Think of Singapore as an oversized university with slightly older (but not necessarily more mature) students with much, much larger wallets.....Honestly, you'll have a blast - dont worry - unless of course quasimodo's your better looking brother, you spit like John Prescott, have the manners of the Incredible Hulk and smell like a cows arris....actually I based that on a few engineers I know so maybe you should be worried...

Ps - to be honest, if I were you, I'd probably give the British Club a miss.....you wont need it from a social point of view

Give the clubs a miss, but maybe join some of the associations. The ANZA folks know how to party, and the social networking side of the British Chamber of Commerce, Britcham, is pretty active. Perhaps get yourself dragonboating (contact me if you're interested - I don't do it but I know quite a few of them and they know how to party!). Also join some of the Sinapore-based internet forums, there are always things going on.

Jules, have a look at the forum on www.singaporeexpats.com

They have a section where they organise social events, and from what I can gather they're mainly young people.

edit: I should have read up - I completely repeated myself. Duh.
