I will have four days before we depart on a cruise to Thailand and Vietnam. Where would be a good place to go close to Singapore? Been to Malaysia already. Thanks in advance.

Just hang in Singapore, if you haven't spent some time there already. Love the place.

Gotta agree. If you insist on leaving for a little while, you might try one of the
resorts on Batam (take the ferry from Tanah Merah) or Bintam. If you're into
slumming, try JB or Nagoya on Batam (leave from the WTC). But honestly, having lived
there, it's easy to fill up four days with exploring neighborhoods, doing the tourist
things and spending more money than you should.

4 days is just about 'right' for a casual tour of Singapore.

Instead of visiting their tourist attractions, try walking in some of their suburb
housing estates on your own. It's quite interesting. If you want a place to R&R, try
out their hotels at Sentosa Island (very costly by my standard). Chinese New Year is
round the corner (mid-Feb), try walking their Chinatown too...

There are other places close to Singapore. Batam or Bintan islands (Indonesia) are
about 45 to 60 minutes away from Singapore by ferry. Up north, about 30 - 60 minutes,
is the state of Johor, Malaysia. But with 4 days only, I would rather concentrate my
tour in Singapore....

Enjoy yourself!

go down to Clifford Pier which is just around from the Merlion and book an evening
dinner cruise on the Admiral Cheng Ho. (or one of the smaller boats which cruise
around Sentosa Island). Jurong Bird park is good value. It has a monorail which
circles the park and saves the feet. Take a shopping trolley around the top floor of
the Funan Centre (Advantage computer supermarket) Have a dinner at Raffles - it
really isn't that expensive. If you like curry, book dinner at the Tiffin room. (tidy
casual dress). Upstairs is the long bar for a genuine Singapore Sling. The east coast
parkway has some great seafood restaurants - check them out. Also, its a great place
to go in the evening for the cool sea breezes and the kite-flying. Other good eating
areas I found were at Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and any of the sidewalk eating centres.
Ride the MRT train system (not at peak times) to some of the smaller centres outside
the business/tourist area.

Default Getting away from Singapore

Sorry, I forgot to mention that we will be spending four days at the end of the cruise in Singapore. Thanks for all the ideas while in Singapore. Maybe we will try the ferry over to the islands. Thanks in advance.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Sing for four days. We like the
Botanic Garden. If you like gardening, you can spend a whole day there. Then
relax, eat, and drink your evening away. You need plenty of rest to prepare for
the vigors of cruising.

Fair 'nuff. Have only flown through the former, and haven't even flown OVER, the
latter. I was contrasting to, say, Cambo or Nam...

(1) 4 days is way TOO much for sterile Singabore.
(2) Going on a cruise with a thousand Singaporian peasants is just plain asking
for trouble.
(3) Been to M'sia? Go again. Its heaven compared to Singabore!

yes this response certainly adds to the charm and attraction of spending time
in uptight rigid moralistic and boring singapore [they do have fabulous
restaurants however]

You mean Angkor, right? 8-)

Also a decent suggestion - I disagree that Singapore is a "waste" but the original
questioner also said he had four days there at the other end of his cruise - so yes,
Angkor is a decent suggestion...last time I checked you could still get visas on
arrival in Siem Reap.
