Those were the days.
Photos taken in 1939 of a couples motoring holidays. Must have been a great time to own a car and do motoring trips. Worth a look. I would like to have the car now

You feel you are right back there. Thanks for that.

Great shots.
I imagine anyone fortunate enough to have a car back then, could truly enjoy the freedom of the open road with so little traffic about.

Beautiful. The England my parents grew up in. Very nostalgic.
Not sure why it's in PDT, but lovely.

I agree that the pictures are absolutely charming.
But I'll bet that car, although very pretty, was slow, noisy, unreliable, costly and smelly.

Pretty? Yes.
Slow? Not by standards in those days.
Noisy? All part of the fun and easy to gauge the health of the engine, unlike today's cars
Unreliable? Maybe, but easy to fix, all part of the fun.
Costly ? I don't think. I believe new cars were available from less than 200 quid, which wasn't such a fortune even back then and petrol at little more than a few pennies per ltr,...... peanuts.
Smelly ? Maybe, but all part of the attraction. I used to get high on the smell of a dirty oily rag.
I passed my test in a pre-war Rover,(poor man's Rolls Royce), as soon as I was old enough to take it in the 60s, but I drove all around the empty roads by myself for years before that, still hardly able to see over the steering wheel, with no problem or interference at all.
I have some old glass plate photos of my old man riding an ancient Sunbeam motor cycle, maybe worth developing into a modern format if I knew how.
