Default Stripe for Bravery

On a recent TV programme Nigel Farage visited a relatives war grave. the relative had been awarded a chevron shaped piece of cloth which was sewn on to the lower part of the sleeve.

The award was for bravery.

Does anyone know what it's called.

A chevron on a sleeve generally indicates a rank. One chevron on the lower part of the sleeve would likely indicate the rank of lance corporal.

A straight piece of cloth could a Wound Stripe.

Difficult to be more accurate without a picture. Any idea what the programme was called?

They are not bravery awards. They are service chevrons. Worn "upside down" on the lower arm, usually one for each year of overseas service.

I think we're on the right track. It was sewn on upside down 6inches from the cuff. Perhaps Farage mistakenly thought it was for bravery. He went on to make some comment about people buying you a beer back home if they saw the chevron.

The programme was the first of several peeps into the private lives of party leaders ahead of the general election.
