PRIME Minister David Cameron has congratulated Rolls-Royce on its 100th anniversary of making aero engines in Derby, calling it a "fantastic landmark".
The firm first agreed to start making engines for British war planes not long after the outbreak of the First World War.
At the time, the company made luxury cars at its factory in Nightingale Road – but the War Office persuaded its engineer in chief, Frederick Henry Royce, to branch out into manufacturing aero engines.
Today, Rolls-Royce's civil aerospace business in Derby is thriving, with 12,000 employed and an order book worth tens of billions of pounds.
