It states that you may qualify for additional points if your work experience is in an area of absolute skills shortage.
Therefore does your occupation have to be included on the OSL or POL to be awarded these points or do both qualify? What is the difference between OSL and POL?
The NZ goverment website does not appear to be terribly clear on this.
Thanks,
Majj.

Hi there,
Both POL and OSL are sought after by NZ. If you appear on either list and you have work experience relating to the occupation, then you'll get the points (as far as I am aware). The POL is the first list they look for applicants from, then they move to the OSL, then they move to the SMC...if there are migrants spaces available (there usually are). Basically if you appear on the POL or OSL and have experience, you'll walk into NZ under current policy.
Though this is only my humble opinion.
Rich.

the bonus points are now given if on the POL but not the OSL. the osl is solely for gaining a work permit easily - nothing more. they don't go from one first then to another - making it up as he goes along as usual.

Is it called a priority occupations list because the occupations are needed as a priority in NZ? Maybe Kiwi3 knows better....oh silly me...

Actually, they do look at the POL first...that's why it's called Priority...hence it is given priority..obviously has no command of basic definitions as ever.....

this is laughable. it is not why it's called priority. it is a different policy and totally unrelated.

So someone qualified in a a priority occupation is not a priority applicant to NZ then? Hmmm, thats very enlightening as Doctors and Medical workers appear on this POL list..
Strangely, they also seem to be treated as a priority.....though I'm sure you must be right and me wrong......as you can't possibly be wrong can you?
I think you should suggest a new name to the NZIS for the category as you have so many influential friends. May be the KIWI3 category to boost your ego some more....

Please read the original question to which you replied. slowly. then read your reply even slower. Once you have fully understood this please read my follow up. or shall I try and explain again?
Right. To get the bonus points Majj was on about you need to be on the POL - not the OSL. The OSL makes NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER TO PR - SMC - WHATEVER.
They do not look for applicants from one list then another. I suggest you do some homework before offering advice.

Yup, the statement "as far as I am aware" was in relation to the points awarded. My comments were in relation to PR, not simply gaining a work permit...
Sorry, but I disagree....if your occupation features on the OSL, then you'll have a greater chance of gaining PR than someone who's occupation does not appear on the OSL...that's why it is called an Occupational Shortage list...or is this also named incorrectly?
So lets see if I have this.... that's both categories named as such because the names have no bearing on the types of categories they are then? Hmm, it's ever likely applicants have difficulty in getting approved....ha ha, you make me laugh funny man....

Read S L O W L Y . Bonus points are from the POL - NOT the OSL. and yes, this IS for PR.
Again - read S L O W L Y . The OSL is for work permits. End of!
No - it will not make any difference to PR. It is for W O R K P E R M I T S !
how did you pass the IELTS test?

Have to admit that I am always thinking in terms of PR, so some of my comments do not purtain to work visa's etc. These visas are temporary, and for the most of us, I would imagine that emigration is not thought of as temporary. I have never imagined "just" applying for a work visa/permit....so I still stand by my comments...if you appear on either list, then you have a better chance of PR / getting into NZ than those that do not appear on the lists. I also maintain that POL applicants are treated as a Priority.
The SMC is vague at best in the current format, so I'd employ an agent to help rather than rely on one or 2 peoples opinions. The SMC is also discretionary which leaves a lot of room for the NZIS to pick and choose approved applicants. Under the GS route, those with 29 points and above, definitely could apply for and gain PR (meeting all other criteria). Under the new system over 100 points only allows a pooling of applicants....you never know who over 100 points will or will not be invited to apply for PR.
Sorry to use your thread to wind up Kiwi3...he is an antagonist amonget the threads...
good luck anyway, Rich.
