Hope someone can help me here as I am so bogged down with techie chat.

Most of our British stuff is working here - including our old British TV, which we have given to my Mum-in-Law in the basement as we have just got a brand new smart Toshiba TV.

Now in the UK we would connect the Wii via the Red, Yellow and White outlets - which do not exist on the new TV.

We called various stores to ask their advice:

Best Buy said we should buy a composite to usb converter and this would then work in the USB connection on the TV. They don't stock them but recommended Staples.

Staples said this would not work as we needed to get an old coxial cable ??? They then start to bamboozle me with techie talk.

Then the bell man arrived and said we needed a usb to usb adapter.

Then Future store said we needed a usb to HDML adapter.

Then a local shop said that the usb is just there for adding extra software to the Wii.

Ultimately we can swap TV's with my Mum in Law and give her the brand new one, which at 86 she probably won't appreciate.

I know I could always pop dowstairs and play on the Wii, but I don't think she would appreciate us screaming and shouting at the Wii .

Any advice - really appreciated !!!

Total layman, just what I read in the Owners Manual online - copy attached.

For explanations of cable types and connections, see “Connecting Your TV” on page 27.

Standard A/V cables (composite video) usually come in sets of three, and connects to video devices with analog audio and composite video output. These cables (and the related inputs on your TV) are typically color-coded according to use: yellow for video, red for stereo right audio, and white for stereo left (or mono) audio.

Component video cables come in sets of three and are for use with video devices with component video output. (ColorStream is Toshiba’s brand of component video.) These cables are typically color-coded red, green, and blue. Separate audio cables are required for a complete connection.

You use the AV Component adapter cable (which is supplied) to join the standard A/V cables to the new colour stream cables and then plug them into the back of the tv as shown in the attached picture.

Interesting the TV doesn't have RCA inputs (The red, white and yellow connectors your mentioned). I guess they're phasing them out. Also those suggestions from the stores are horrifyingly wrong - a USB converter is for a PC not for a Wii -> TV video connection.

buy a new wii can pick them up for about $50

Be great and easy - being told by some that UK games are regionalised and wont play !

Have sound a B&W picture and strange size.

Does anyone know any techie person in Toronto we can pay who could sort this and also installed our surround sound?

Yep, RCA Composite (Red/White/Yellow) will be a PAL encoded signal, meaning the colour part of the video is unable to be decoded by the TV, as well as other potential display problems. They use NTSC here.

Buying either of the products I gave above will resolve the problem, as Component Cables and HDMI are not encoded in PAL or NTSC and will work on TVs from either region. The component cables are only $5, I bought the exact one myself and it works great - just plug one end in the Wii A/V output and the cables into the TV and you should be good to go.

Only downside is it does take ~2 weeks to arrive from Hong Kong.

That is definitely the easiest and cheapest way of doing things, better than the R/W/Y jobby. Monocable is another good site that usually have it for a couple bucks and has a decent return policy, even if there isn't anything wrong with the cables so worth a punt.

The B/W image is probably related to PAL output on a NTSC only tele? What's the tele exactly anyway?

It's a Toshiba 3D Smart TV.

In the end swapped TV's around and we have perfect Bell Fibe on the tele we brought from the UK, my Wii, Mac-book Pro and our multi- region DVD all play perfectly via a power converter ! As do all the Electrical items we brought over from the UK.

Thanks to all the advisers above. We will swap TV's again at a later stage, for now my Mother in Law has a top of the range Smart TV !
