My Husband has been offered a job in calgary, dont realy know much abuot the city but im lead to believe that the cost of living is very high.

the salery offered is $36.75 ph, he is a constuction plant fitter (millwright) in your opionion would you say this is a good wage?
We are a family of 4.

also where would you say is a nice area to live? The Job is in south east (I think) but would prefare to live north/south west as heard the areas are alot nicer.

The government's http://www.workingincanada.gc.ca website can give you an idea of the average wage for his position. It sounds like pretty good pay for a full time job but I don't know much about that industry.

In all honesty it's not a bad salary but if I were to live in Calgary then my house hold income would need to be higher.

In terms of the average millwright payscale I would say you could do slightly better but it's posible to get a lot worse!

Hope this helps somewhat.

I agree. That works out to ~$76K a year if it's full time. Many manage on that or less, but I wouldn't fancy it. Ireland1, are the kids old enough for you to consider part time work, if allowed by the visa?

thanks for your replys

the company told us that my husband will be working 60 per week he will get 36.75 for the first 40 hours then time and a half for the remaining 20 hours.

To me this seems to be very long working weeks, would people working here usually be working such extreme hours?

In my opinion its a good salary. But again I only make 12/hr so anything that high boggles my mind that anyone would think its not a good salary.

I'd be hesitant banking on any more than the 40/week.

If he does end up working 60/week that's great but I doubt it'll happen.

He has been informed it will definatly be 12 hour days, so 60 hours a week. just seems very long in my opinion.

In mine too. But if it's true I don't think money would be the main problem. He'd be making $114K per year. Which isn't bad at all.

60hrs/week would be horrible, whats the point of making that kind of money if you never have any time during the week to enjoy it? I don't consider long hours commonplace, but it does exist. It's not the first time I've heard of long hours like that - there's always those stories you hear about the US with the 3am office meetings.

But has he been told he will work 5 days a week?

Many people I know work 12 hour days (standard shift work hours) but very few work longer than 44 hours a week (or 88 hours over a 2 week period, which is how the pay periods/work periods are done here).

Overtime is not normally paid until more than 44 hours have been worked, and the company would require consent for a worker to do more than those hours.

Is the position Unionised? Might be worth asking to look at the Union Contract/Agreement.

My last few weeks have been just over 100 hours (over 7 days not 5). That is a long week, but you gotta make hay as they say.
