I'm some way off this yet but was just reading through some information regarding citizenship and see that we must provide proof of being able to communicate in either English or French.
So is my English GCSE certificate sufficient or am I going to have to do some test approved by the government to prove I can speak the queens finest

Taken from the instruction manual for citizenship application.
Proof of completion of secondary or post-secondary education in French or English includes:
A diploma or transcripts from a secondary or post-secondary school indicating the successful completion of a program, in Canada or abroad. or
A diploma or certificate from a secondary or post-secondary school indicating successful graduation, in Canada or abroad.
Note: A single course done in English or French does not meet the requirement .
Therefore sending a copy of you full GCSEs with your application which includes 2 English courses Language and literature will be ok. Our applications are in Vancouver have gone past the primary checks stage and we never completed any language course.

GCSE is good as long as you have at least two English subjects on there. I had English and English Lit.
Now
There is a grey area here!!!! Is it two subjects taught in English? Or two English subjects. We did debate this in an earlier thread. All I know is mine was fine with the two subjects noted above. :@) but I also had several other none English subject passes.
Clear as mud ehh ?

So when the time comes I should be good. My GCSE has English language and English literature.

Looks like were still not 100% certain with the GCSEs. Though according to the website secondary education in English is suffice. There should be no rejections submitting a full list of GCSEs with english language and lit. If they are rejecting GCSEs they need to amend their information for language proficiency. A alot of people are going to get long delays if they get their applications returned.
So far has anyone been got past the in process stage with only submitting GCSE s for language proficiency?
My status application status:
in process as of Feb 21st 2012
full list of GCSEs submitted, 2 english subjects and all other subjects completed at the time.

Bur surely a GCSE is not proof of completion of secondary education. Wouldn't that be A levels which are taken at the same age as completing High school here?

I've been reading the debates on this as well. With GCSE being equivalent to grade 11 and A level being grade 13. I found a link earlier earlier and it did say grade 12 equivalency for various countries around the world. For the UK it said GCSE / O level. I will dig the link out when I'm on the computer.

Section 3 states that you dont even need to have done post secondary education if you are from abroad
3. Proof of completion of a secondary or post-secondary education program in French or English, in Canada or abroad, such as:
A transcript, diploma or certificate from a secondary school; or
A transcript, diploma, certificate or degree from a post-secondary school

Surely 'O' Levels count double like the away goals rule as they were more difficult than GCSE's
