Can be answered whilst wearing gloves Damn near impossible if you need to touch the screen to answer the call - and buttons are dying out

You didn't say network, etc.

I think you are going to be looking at an old/obsolete model with those specs, something that might still have physical buttons, Android 2.3, etc. You won't get much of the cutting edge smartness. Something like a Huawei, ZTE or cut down phone from the major manufacturers.

Samsung GT-S5300

I bought one brand new and unlocked for $125 only three weeks ago. I got mine from JB Hi-Fi. Smallish screen but it does what it says on the box.

I don't want cutting edge smartness - hence the spec. Need phone to talk, not watch movies.

Unlocked - no network.

Fairly tough Put it in a case, the screen is a vulnerable spot no matter what I'll be wearing gloves - case is impracticle.
Can be answered whilst wearing gloves Damn near impossible if you need to touch the screen to answer the call - and buttons are dying out Voice activation?

OK, network matters because at this spec they are unlikely to work across all frequencies for 3G. It's Telstra or Optus networks, not both.

Also, its likely to be locked, but be unlockable with a code (either from the carrier or ebay).

Given your requirements I'd get to Coles and see if they have any of the Telstra Indy phones at $29 left (good chance they do). Those have physical buttons IIRC and are cheap enough that when you kill it (as you will probably do) you won't mourn it too much.

You might have to accept pink, rather than black, though.

I'd say the samsung galaxy w is a good bet. My missus has one and drops it all the time, its pretty rugged, and it'll do everything you want surprisingly quickly. They are about $180 unlocked in dick smith, probably less if you shop around or on ebay.

There are lots of other phones that I could have suggested, but the need to be able to answer the call in gloves is a killer. No capacitance screen, or capacitance buttons - or you are going to have to use your nose to accept the call.

The only other approach is an auto-answer method such as a "shake-to-answer" app, when you could get a more up-to-date phone.

However, if its going to get likely to get broken in the course of work, a really cheap phone, that also has hardware buttons, has its own advantages (even if it is pink).

How about this one? $149.00 Kogan Agora (They say it a Samsung Galaxy Note in the reviews)
http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/agora-50...re-smartphone/

Then got for the Kogan $29.00 per month unlimited call option (uses Telstra Network) or the Amaysim $39.00 per month unlimited call option (uses Optus Network)

EFTM | Published: 2013-04-23
"It’s $149 and that’s one of the cheapest smartphones you’ll find anywhere on the market and in picture comparisons and looking side by side it’s hard not to mistake it for being the almost twin sibling to the Samsung Galaxy Note."

Gizmodo | Published: 2013-04-23
"The Kogan Agora is amazing bang for your buck. It’s a $149 Android smartphone running stock Android 4.1, and yet it’s incredibly versatile, powerful and well-featured for the price point. It’s a bespoke Kogan offering, so you’re only going to get it at the online resellers store. It’s well worth a look."

Gear Diary | Published: 2013-04-22
"The Kogan Agora Smartphone looks to change the landscape... at just AU$149, unlocked and free of contracts, that’s a good price on its own, but the spec sheet could easily be mistaken for phones costing over $100 more."

Trusted Reviews | Published: 2013-04-05
"In many ways the Agora really is a bargain handset. You get pretty speedy performance from its dual-core processor, it's got half decent battery life and its call quality is pretty good too. 7/10"
