A dark house? A twitchy trigger finger? A Valentines Day mistake? Or something more mysterious?
Or is this one of the things that is an additional risk in SA, as apparently it has happened before

On your second, it has most certainly happened before. Where loaded firearms are kept in a house as a means of self-defense there is always the chance of an accident occurring.
I think it's fair to acknowledge that this is not strictly a South African 'thing' though.

Not sure anyone should be "feeling for him" until the truth is known. According to the BBC report the SA police had previously been to his house on domestic violence calls and they are "surprised" that there are stories circulating that he mistook her for an intruder. As things stand so far, it is sounding more like another case of a man who was violent towards women and ended up killing her. Sadly, it is not that uncommon. Presumably the truth will come out in court and we will see.

Yes, it seems screams were heard by the neighbours in the evening. Maybe not as much of an accident as was first presumed

My gut tells me it was a genuine mistake ...
Mistook for an intruder.
The NZ article mentions

As I have lived in South Africa, I know what it means to be trigger happy. Waking up in the middle of the night, still half asleep hearing something downstairs in the house. Poor girl. Really sad for both of them. What a valentine’s day.

South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime, and many home owners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders, although Pistorius' complex is surrounded by a three meter high wall and electric fence.

Whatever his defence, either way Oscar won't have a leg to stand on.

My gut tells me to relate to the fact that women die, or are beaten up, at the hands of their romantic partners with alarming frequency. I don't yet know this to be the case with OP because nobody yet knows the facts. But I am very far from assuming he is innocent because of his appealing athletic story.

But in so far as the police are saying anything, it is that they are "very surprised" by the idea that he mistook her for a burglar, and that they have had to go out there before for "domestic issues". You may turn out to be right - but there is as yet no reason to suppose that you are at all. Having lived in the US while the O.J. Simpson fiasco was going on, I have seen how a public figure's popularity influences public judgement, even in the absence of actual facts and sometimes in direct contradiction to the actual facts.

I’m not saying he is innocent here. Just saying that stories like this happen in SA. People have mistaken their spouses and even children as intruders and shot them. This is not the first case, nor is it the first for a celebrity. There are many similar stories that have made the news.

We don't know what happened but it sounds very, very dodgy for Oscar.
4am? Yet didn't a log report have her checking into the estate at 6pm?
We'll find out some more tomorrow more information.

Cue the previous Girlfriends telling all, about his Temper Tantrums etc.
Sounds like he is up the creek without a paddle
