Washington DC
So ....
I was at DC over the Thanksgiving holiday and wanted to share some of that experience with you good people.
It was my first time there and, for me, it was a fantastic few days. It is definitely a "walking" vacation, we probably walked 4-5 miles per day. For anybody who is interested in history (primarily American history, admittedly), architecture, art, culture, and food, this is your destination.
I'm attaching some photos, all of which are complete photographic crap, taken from my phone. The point is not to show off my photography acumen, but rather to show how much there is to see, mostly completely free. I probably only saw one tenth of what I would like to see and one hundredth of what all there is to see. On any given excursion, you could turn a different way, walk a different direction on the mall, and see something totally different.
I took pics of the things that moved me, interested me, and your mileage may vary. That's the point, I think.

Mount Vernon ... George Washington's estate. We couldn't take photos inside the mansion, as was the case in many instances in DC.

Re: Washington DC
I think it's because you used URL instead of IMG tag to link them?
Anyway I saw your Flickr link....nice! Can't wait to go to DC myself at some point. I'd like to see the sights, museums (particularly the Smithsonian).
Nice photos though. The botanic gardens look lovely. You also picked a nice sunny day to photograph Capitol Hill.

Re: Washington DC
Thanks, mate.
I'll try to figure all that pic stuff out - tomorrow probably.
It was very good. I didn't get to do the Library of Congress, which I regret, but you really can't possibly do it all in one trip.

Re: Washington DC
I would have liked to get more of a feel for the place as a city, as opposed to a collection of monuments and museums. I feel if I went back now, it might help me get a better understanding of the American outlook, somehow. There is something about the Mall that feels very foreign to me, I don't know why exactly. Sort of like a Classical planned space, only much newer.

I only scratched the surface off the Smithsonians. (1) The National Gallery of Art and (2) The Portrait Gallery. But it was fantastic - I'm a museum junkie. You could literally spend a full day in any of the galleries. Wonderful.
The weather was perfect for me, cool but not too cold. You spend a lot of time walking outside so I definitely wouldn't go in the dead of winter or in the dog days of summer. Spring or autumn, for sure.

I've recently immersed myself into American history, as a hobby, and that does really add context. I wouldn't visit DC without really covering American history first. I did the same thing when travelling abroad, IMO it makes things ever so much more interesting once you actually get to see them.

Re: Washington DC
You are making words, and it seems to be in sentence structure, but I do not understand.
Thank you

I've been told to go check out DC. I would most likely go for 4 days and spend 2 of those days solely in museums.
Glad you had fun anyway. Was the city all you expected?
Oh to link images you need to use IMG (place a [ and ] around the IMG then use /IMG at the end (again wrap the /IMG with [ and ]

Cool pics. The only knowledge of DC is what I've seen on NCIS and in the Alex Cross books

Re: Washington DC
We went to DC this past August for our sons 9th birthday. Being on a very limited budget we loved that there was so much to do for free. Our 9yo said it was his best vacation ever, and this is after we went to Walt Disney World in Florida last summer! I forgot to take my trainer with me and spent the entire 3 days we were there walking about in flip flops!
I uploaded loads of pics to my Flickr account too so my folks could see them rather than sending them a gazillion email attachments.

Re: Washington DC
I haven't been to Boston since I was a child, I actually lived in Massachusettes with my family , among many other places... my parents were American gypsies. But I would like to go again and see it from an adult perspective.
Actually, I was in DC for 6 days and spent 2 days in museums ... it's still not enough time to cover everything, but you do get weary so I guess there is a saturation point. I was visiting family so two of those days were spent on Thanksgiving, one day for shopping and cooking, one day for guests and feasting.
Yes, the city was all I expected, I like to walk around and look at stuff, and I'm obsessed with politics and American history, so it worked for me.
