Default residency requirement for citizenship

Hi there:

I have got my PR in year 2009 december and have been overseas after landing and visa validation, now in order to meet 12 months maximum overseas stay out of 4 years required to get eligible for applying citizenship, in this scanario do i need to stay remaining complete 3 years without going further to overseas?
What if if i leaves for short vacations/travel during these 3 years, in case if these absenses gets deducted from my 3 years stay, whether still i am eligible for applying citizenship or what rule applies?

I thought you had to be on Aussie soil for 4 years, and if you go abroad, then it doesn't count towards the 4 years. You can't have more than 12 months total offshore stay in addition to your 4 years- so it might take up to 5 years to get citizenship.
Please tell me if I'm wrong, as at this rate I'll qualify about 6 months b4 OH as he is away on business a lot.
