Hi,
We posted a thread back in Jan this year as we are moving to NZ at the end of June. We just wanted to say a big thank you to all the people who replied. Your comments were really welcoming, friendly & helpful.
We have made some baby steps towards sorting things out - one of those being a leaving party!!! We have also had 1 quote for shipping and the possibility of work in Wellington for hubby, so not bad so far!
If anyone has any experience of life in Wellington it would be great to hear from you.

Wellington's the only place to be
We love it here. Compact city centre, nice suburbs with reasonable commuting distances. All the facilities you need.
It's not half as windy as people will have you believe.
Well okay sometimes it's really windy but not all the time.
What do you want to know?
Have a browse through our blog (link below in my signature)
There are many many pictures on there of NZ and Wellington.

Wellington is not like the rest of New Zealand - compared to other areas the weather SUCKS sometimes......
However as Rob says it is a compact capital with everything you could want but all 'doable'. We used to live near London and hardly wnet to anything there becuase it was too diffcult and too expensive....In Wellington we seem to get invlovled in something virtually every weekend and it isn't breaking the bank. OK we are still new here so I guess are making the effort.
Anyway it's a big topic so perhaps you could ask specific questions?

Thank you for all your responses. I will explain the situation.
I have applied for loads of jobs in the following areas: Whangarei, New Plymouth, Hamilton and Tauranga. I chose these areas because they have a good potential for work. They are also not too far from Auckland if we want to go there for the day or shopping etc. They are also prone to the better weather in NZ.
I applied for one job in Tauranga and the company contacted me by Email to say they wanted to phone me regarding work... Yippee i thought.
They had no jobs going in Tauranga but if i wanted to get myself to Wellington providing i could do what my CV stated there would be a job there for me. So now i am thinking that Wellington could be a place to start.
The job is in Petone, Lower hutt. Where would be a good place to look for rental properties within cycling (cheaper than car) distance to petone.
Also what do i need to earn to survive in Wellington. At present it is just the wife and I to support. We are thinking about starting a family at some point so it may be my wages only.
If i think of anything else i will post it
Many thanks
Mark

I concur. Wellington's weather is shit. Yes, it IS windy. Yes! It is cold - especially in winter when you're living in a wooden shack with no central heating. Also, despite its reputation as the cultural capital - there is much more cultural stuff happening in auckland (And the weather is 10 times better!)

How much time have you spent in Wellington? The weather's hardly shit, and yes if there's a Southerly it can be bitterly cold. But we only had about 10 frosty mornings last winter, it doesn't get that cold!!
And we insulated our shed and installed a wood burner so it's nice and cosy now

Every time I've been to Auckland it's either been humid, or raining and sunny at the same time.

and I don't hear Mainlanders saying ' Wellington is crap....Christchurch is the place to be" .....
