Default Colon - how safe is it really?

Hi There

I'm an escapee from the NZ forum - needing some advice on Colon. It looks like we may be visiting Colon by yacht as we sail thorugh the Panama canal on our way to New Zealand. We will have to go ashore in Colon to buy provisions but we have been advised that it really is quite unsafe - is this the case? We will also visit Panama City on our way through I would think.

Any advice would be much appreciated!
