All that was going on when I was there last Xmas. Woolworths in my town were selling the shelving and everything.

I think Waterford were under threat but not sure if they got bailed out?

Woolworths went last Christmas, a wonderful Christmas present for its workers , don't forget, even what appear to be the most British and American of products are often owned by companies from other countries.

I never shopped in Woolworths or kwik save, so i wasn't bothered when they went. I didn't even notice

Many other shops to choose from, spoilt for choice. Times change and old stores die of death. Good thing IMO.

I loved the old Woolworths stores, where you could get most things cheaply, they had wooden floors, pay points on every counter, they did cheap 45 and 78 rpm covers of the hits of the day, OK we are talking about the late 50s early 60s but they wer an Alladins cave to us kids, I think they went downhill as other supermarkets came in, and that is what they were, some of the first supermarkets in the UK.

I don't know if Dewhurst butchers went under as a chain but they closed down in my town, not just because of supermarkets though (we only have two and one is small) but also we have a huge farmers market twice a week and being in the West Country the produce is very fresh and very cheap given the quality.

Woolies was a fav. of mine at Christmas....and Easter...lol...we were lucky to be back home in the last few years on both of those occasions...and I nearly cried with the choice and atmosphere in the shop......alas though after years of Christmas in West Aus...anything will seem more atmospheric at those times of years than here.....and there is always Marks and Spencers.....
