Default Furnishing when you arrive....

Second post of the day...

There is obviously a period of weeks that it takes for your shipped furniture to arrive in the US (company would pay for it).

The company appear to have a history of organising a rental house for when imports arrive.

But what do you sleep on until your stuff arrives, even if we weren't shipping the beds I can't imagine bed shopping on day one for same day delivery.

We should have an airfreight box as well, but I can't fit a sofa/bed/table in there......

You could buy a futon couch somewhere and crash on it for awhile while you await your gear. Then put the futon in the den or something and keep it around for 'Aunt Alice' when she comes to visit.

Airbeds are an option as well.

Many mattress places will deliver in a few days, though if you talk to them they may also give you the address of the warehouse where you can go and pick it up immediately. I've done that before as I needed a bed immediately and just drove it home directly from their warehouse.

I think Costco and Sams Clubs also sells mattresses 'cash and carry'

When I first arrived in the US I quickly bought an air mattress, TV along with cheap, plastic garden furniture.

After I got my feet on the ground, the garden furniture did eventually make it's way outside! And I used the air mattress for guests.

Got me out of trouble.

I would have thought the company would rent a furnished place...? We stayed in a hotel for a month, but I know other friends were put up in furnished rentals.

We were put in a furnished apartment, a company called Oakwood,

http://www.oakwood.com/

It was quite nice for a short period of time, we had 2 huge bedrooms both with large bathrooms attached, a lounge, and kitchen/dining area. It had everything you needed (apart from a kettle), furniture/bedding/towels/cutlery/coffee maker... The maid even came in once a week to clean.

An alternative to renting a furnished place is to rent some furniture until your stuff arrives. I did this when I moved cross-country.

We rented furniture etc for the first month until our container arrived. That included baby furniture and crockery, kitchen stuff etc

As guide I think we paid about $400-500 for everything we needed in a 3 bed apartment.

Raymour &Flanagan and Sleepys do next day delivery. I just bought a bed.

Go to Walmart or any sporting good store and buy an air matress for the first night. Then sleep in bliss when you bed is delivered

Hasn't that got to have a big tax implication?

Yes, you will be taxed on it as additional income, along with the rent that the company pays for you.

so it's not really a big implication because most of it would be taxed anyway, and if they're stumping for an accountant to sort it out, it would make life a lot easier.

It's also possible that this company's relocation package includes covering taxes caused by their paying for these relocation expenses. Something very important to try and get in a relocation package, imo.
