Brisbane to LA to Toronto to Halifax is one way. We found the cheapest though was Air New Zealand. Auckland, San Fran, Toronto booked directly with ANZ. Book a cheap internal flight with WestJet on their website to save some more $$.

Looks like this will be the cheapest way:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/23871811 I can tell you that booking a return flight online through Qantas is really expensive. I'll tell you what we've been doing, but I don't think it will be all that helpful. We keep booking return tickets from Canada. So flying Canada to Oz and then back to Canada. It seems to be almost half the cost of booking it return to and from Oz. It works for us because we booked it that way the first time we came out so we can keep going back that way every year. Like I said, not that helpful in your situation because you have to leave from Oz and return to Oz. But, it's worth checking out the travel agency we use just in case they have any deals or know of a cheap way to do it. http://www.downunder-travel.com/

That's a lot more helpful... I figured you'd be along eventually.
How much did you pay for your tickets Dorothy? We ended up paying $2000 per adult (including all taxes), but that's going return back to Canada. It works as long as we go back every year! ![]()

When we flew from TO to Adelaide it was just over $5k CDN for 3 adults and 1 child. I've seen seat sales for as little as $1800 AUD return, but those are very hard to come by.

Air Canada fly from Sydney to Vancouver (maybe with stop in Honolulu). Is there a direct flight from Vancouver to Halifax?

Try looking at Air Tahiti Nui as they go Australia to New York. Then get a flight from there to Canada. You get a free (ish) holiday in Tahiti as well.

I put this question to some of the Mooseshaggers here at work and they reckon that from the end of the year (or there aboots) it will be Virgin to LA and then low cost airlines (Alaska Air was mentioned) from there to Canada eh.
