Default Who can certify documents? A list.

I have been trawling through the site looking for the full list of people qualified in then UK to certify documents and been unsuccessful.

The full list can be found here: http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-countersign.asp

You should provide the certifier with both the document and your photocopy and ask them to write on or stamp the copy:

“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document”

You must also check that they write or stamp the following information on each document that they certify.

o The date
o Their signature
o Their name and title printed clearly
o Their personal or business address
o Their registration number (if applicable)

If you have lots of documents to certify then you can just have the ceritfier attach a letter or a card rather than having to go through this process for every document!

Default Re: Who can certify documents? A list.

They generally have a stamp which will have their name, address and contact details on it so all they have to do is sign and date it. I had about 40 pages and each one had to be signed and dated. In the end the JP only charged me 20 euros.

A handy tip is if you are applying online for the visa you can just scan in the original colored document. The original if it is in color does not need to be certified.

Does this list also apply to documents which need to be certified for Vetassess?

I got a Uni lecturer to sign for me. Typically it is whoever can normally certify documents in your own country - so yes, I would go with the list as stated.

I have been looking into this some more...

"Documents must be certified according to the legal practices of the country. Failing that, they should be witnessed by a person who's occupation is comparable to those listed above."

This all really comes down to the wording and what the Department means by 'failing that'. So I guess it is a matter of what constitutes reasonable failure to obtain certification according to the legal practices of the country.

In light of this I would err on the side of caution and in the first instance I would aim to obtain certification from one of the following (List taken from the Australian High Commission's website):

Australian Terminology / UK / Ireland

1. Practising lawyer / Solicitor / Solicitor
2. Magistrate / Magistrate / n/a
3. Public notary / Notary Public / Notary Public
4. Justice of the Peace / Justice of the Peace / n/a
5. Commissioner of Declaration / Commissioner for Oaths / Commissioner for Oaths
6. Position/agency recognised by the law of the country to certify documents
7. Officer of a Court appointed by a Judge to take affidavits
8. Peace Commissioner

If anyone could shed some light on this i'm sure it would be much appreciated by all!

With an online application, you probably don't (we made the mistake of getting loads of stuff certified, only to find out we didn't need to!), so long as the documents are scanned in colour.

Kev,

You will need to scan original references, birth certificate, passport, PCC (Which is in black and white so will need to be certified I think). Basically anything in black and white that you are intending on scanning needs to be certified.

We have had loads of stuff certified but we have to send stuff via a agent and both have kids with other partners so some of the documents have to be certified.
