Default alternative to perhentian island

I have 4-6 days(up to a week) free in mid-October & since i'm going to be in
Malaysia or Singapore during that time, i was thinking of going to the
Perhentian Islands again but the NE Monsoon will probably hit the islands on
it's way down from the gulf of Thailand. Can someone recommend somewhere
else to go during mid-October, preferably somewhere similar to the
Perhentian islands where i can rest & do some swimming/snorkelling. I think
it's safe to rule out Tioman island & Langkawi as i think they're not that
great for snorkelling + it's quite touristy.

I was reading an old travel artcile that i had kept from back in the 90's.
It was about a week live on board a Bugis schooner/pinisi(sp?) sailing
eastwards from Bali to the komodo islands etc. But after doing a search on
the internet, all the prices i've seen from websites are in US$ & seem quite
expensive. Plus the boats & operators seem to cater more for scuba divers
rather then doing more cultural visits along the islands & coast. Anyone
done one of these trips before or any trips/holidays by boat in Indonesia &
can recommend a company or crew that does 1 week long trips. Thanks.

before i forget, i think i'd better restrict my holiday search to Thailand,
Malaysia & Indonesia. Thanks for any help.

Mid-October is a bit late, but could still be fine for the Perhentian
islands. I'd go there.

I did a quite similar thing twice, in a small boat (approx 5-8 people)
from labuhanbajo (FLORES) to LABUHAN LOMBOK. Very nice snorkelling and
this trip costed close to nothing. The boats were going back from the
gilli islands to labuhanbajo, this direction was mor expensive. Food and
comfort on this boats was basic, but i always enjoyed the trips (short
walks on rinca and komodo) becuase of very good snorkeling and nice
people ...

You could just go to one of the gillies north of lombok (also quite good
snorkelling), and check out if this boats are still going ...

Hi Manfred,

Thanks for the info. now i have something to work with!

Are these boats the local Bugis pinisi/schooner or just ordinary fishermen's
trawlers or cargo boats that were returning to Lombok? how much did it costs
& where do you find these boats on Flores/Labuhanbajo or even Gillies,
Lombok? do you just turn up at the harbour & ask about boats returning or
did you find them through a local travel agent? Sorry about asking so many
questions it's just that i've always wanted to do this trip but information
is hard to come by, so any info would be good. Thanks.

This were really small boats defenitely not bugis schooner, I'd say
ordinary fishermen's trawlers describes it quite good

I do not remember the price, but it was more or less the same we would
have spent in 4 days travelling around by bus and ferry (with rental for
homestays) anyway. It was really basic, and used by nearly all
trevellers heading from flores to lombok (this was quite a common route
a couple of years ago)

The first time, there was a kind of "office" in the harbour of
labuhanbajo, and there you were asked anyway in every homestay or in the
bus station if you wanted to do this .. no problem to get it ...

The second time we arrived in the morning in labuhannajo and there was a
guy asking around to find 2 more people for the trip, so we went
directly from the bus to the boat ... this was 4 years ago, so all this
information is defenitely not actual.

Everybody travelling around in the area was informed about this tour
then, so it was absolutely no problem to get information (e.g. sengiggi
or gillies) ...

If you want, you can ask a friend of mine (he is from lombok) if he can
help you with more accurat information. You can directly email him -
(answer can take a while) - find the address on the webpage announced in
my sig...
