Default getting from nice to cinque terra

Hi,
I'm planning a two weeks trip to france with my wife and our 2 years
old daughter. Since we try to avoid long drives, we are planning to
rent a car and stay in provence area. However, I really want to visit
cinque terra and wondered if there is a train going from nice to
cinque terra, and how long is the ride. Is it better to drive by car?
Thanks,
Omer

There are trains, but you need to change (at Ventimiglia and/or
Genova).
The trip takes about 5-6 hrs.

Cinque TerrE (plural, since they are "the Five LandS" ... that's what
the name means !)

I do not drive, so I can't advise you about that. Last time I was there
(a while ago), one of the peculiarities of the Cinque TerrE (from W to E
: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) was that
they were NOT connected between them by road, only by rail or footpaths
(or by sea). One could reach the outskirts of some of them by car and
then one had to park one's car there.

I guess you can't do them as a day trip. If you are lucky, you'd have to
take a train from Nice to Genova, and another one from Genova to La
Spezia or further (stopping at one of the C.T.). My timetable gives 5
hours and 20 minutes for the first train in the morning, which is not at
all early. Use http://home.arcor.de/e.lauterbach/au...fplanx-en.html
to get timetables.

If you are unluckly you'd have to change also at Ventimiglia.

In what world do you live ?
AFAIK the fastest train combination can do it in 5 hours and 16 minutes
with one change, and wasting most of a day (departing at 10am), and all
the others are more or less slower !
