Wien-Bratislava hydrofoil
The Cook's timetable lists a daily hydrofoil run from Vienna to Bratislava,
leaving early in the a.m., returning late afternoon. Trip takes 1 1/2 hour.
Should be pleasant.

Is it pleasant? As I understand it, the hydrofoils have airplane-like
seating. You can't go outside and stand on the deck, and unless you
have a window seat your view is limited, as it would be on an
airplane.
Am I wrong about this? People kept recommending the hydrofoil from
Budapest to Vienna, but everything I read about it had so many
negatives that I took the train....

Yes, but you can't use the Wien - Bratislava - Budapest hydrofoil for short
trips Wien - Bratislava.
However, those hydrofoils don't run during the winter period.

Re: Wien-Bratislava hydrofoil
I took the Wien/Budapest hydrofoil in 1998, at which time there were at
least two services. One, an Austrian service, had deluxe vessels, but
because of the tide conditions, they were grounded for a time and we took a
smaller Hungarian boat, which was a bit spartan. However, I do remember
that I stood on deck (not too much space, as I recall) for a time and
enjoyed the fresh air. After Bratislava the trip became much more scenic,
especially on the Hungarian side. Snacks were sold in transit. The trip
took about 4 hours, and we landed right in the heart of town at Budapest,
where we could walk to our hotel.
The Wien/Bratislava service takes 90 minutes and is another line altogether.

I've done it. Bratislava - Vienna.
And I'm afraid you're wrong, according to the DDSG site:

If the human brain were simple enough that we could understand it, we would
be so simple that we couldn't.

I do not know that particular hydrofoil line, nor I've never sailed an
hydrofoil on a river (well, except once from Leningrad to Petrodvorez,
but that looked more a sea stretch), only on lakes or rivers, but I tend
to agree.
I'll take the hydrofoil if I want a fast connection, I'll take a boat if
I want to stay outside and look at the landscape.

Their website gives the distinct impression that the Vienna-Budapest
boat, which always stops in Bratislava for a very short time, can be
used for Vienna-Bratislava trips as well. The arrival time may not be
the best, and you'd better be ready to depart quickly, but I think it
is possible.

I've taken the one between Budapest and Wien. There are two doors on either
side of the cabin which you can open and lean out -- I did a lot of
videotaping from them when we took this trip. The seats are airline style,
though there is considerably more room, and the windows are quite large.
There is also an aft cabin with tables and booths -- you can order snacks,
tea, coffee, etc. Between Budapest and Vienna, there were two locks. While
the boat is in the locks, you can go up on deck.

Too bad -- you missed a very pleasant ride, with wonderful views of the
countryside surrounding the Danube, small towns, castles, etc.
