Renting a car in Europe - pick up in Spain and return in France without exorbatent fees
Hi,
I've been attempting to rent a car in Barcelona and return it in Paris
about 8 days later. I want to see some areas of southwest France and
the Pyrranes that are very difficult to get to by public transport.
I've tried all the big rental car companies, and they all want to
charge me at least a $600 fee for dropping off in a different country!
Anyone have any ideas about where I might be able to rent a car for a
reasonable amount?
Thanks,
Josh

Try a reliable broker like AutoEurope and see what they can do.
Otherwise, doing separate rentals in Spain and France might save money.
Take the train from the closest place in Spain you can drop the first car to
Perpignan. Get a French car in Perpignan for the one-way drive to Paris.
I can't promise that this will be cheaper, but give it a try.

Maybe try reversing your trip? We picked up a Hertz car in Paris
this past January with drop in Barcelona, and the drop charge was only
US$125.

Doesn't sound unreasonable since someone will have to drive it back from
Paris to Madrid (unless they're very lucky and have a reverse one-way hire
from Paris to Madrid

May try to rent a car on the French side (it's not so far from
Barcelona).

I tried AutoEurope and they are the same price. The seperate rentals
sound like a good idea. I will be traveling from Barcelona to Torla,
then up to Bordeaux. I would prefer not to have to drive all the way
to San Sebastian to leave the car, then take the train and get a new
car. Any suggestions about a good border crossing place? Perpignan
is a little too far east from where I'll be coming from.
Ideally, I would like to drop the car somewhere near Jaca or
something, then take a bus or train to Oloron or Pau, then pick up a
new car. Suggestions?

Don't try the train from Jaca, you'll only get as far as Canfranc on the
border. The line from there to Oloron and Pau has been closed since 1970 -
a most scenic line indeed, hope it re-opens one day.
