Default BE is a Public Forum

There seems to be a trend at the moment where many posters think that because they started a thread they have the right to choose who can or can't post in it.

This isn't facebook, and you can't limit your posts to "friends only".

The Mods are getting rather tired of pointing out several times a day that this is a public forum, and that as long as posts remain within the rules any member may post on any thread. If you do not want people to comment, please don't post in the first place! Mods will not remove posts just because the OP does not want comment and/or discussion on the thread's subject matter.

Thanks.

Default Scam warning for student visa holders in Australia

From DIACs newsroom

Scam warning for student visa holders in Australia
01-02-2013 -

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) today warned international students to be aware of individuals impersonating departmental officers seeking payment for alleged breaches of their visa conditions.

The scammers are targeting overseas students in Australia who have limited working rights as part of their visa conditions.

Some students, the department has been told, have received “fine notices” demanding payment of thousands of dollars for unlawfully working above 40 hours a fortnight.

A departmental spokesman said it was a well-organised ruse to con visa holders into transferring a purported “penalty payment” offshore, when none is needed.

“The department has received information from a number of students who have been contacted by people claiming to be from immigration-related agencies,” the spokesman said.

“Con artists claiming to be from DIAC tell their targets that their visa working conditions have been breached, advising that a fine has been issued and must be paid in full.

“Anyone contacted by people seeking such payments should refuse to pay, and should report the incident to police”, the spokesman added.

All such incidents also should be reported to the relevant state or territory police and to the Immigration Dob-In Line on 1800 009 623.

Default Minister's Warning about Visa Scam

Warning about dodgy migration agents
Tuesday, 29 October 2013

Visa applicants have been warned again to avoid unscrupulous migration agencies targeting people interested in migrating to Australia, Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash said today.

The repeated warning follows complaints to have recently resurfaced about AUSFIS, an offshore web-based migration agency. The agency is alleged to have induced individuals to pay for visa applications that were never lodged.

Senator Cash said the website invites people to register their interest by submitting an online web-form with their contact details.

'Once registered, applicants are contacted by phone or email and are asked to pay a fee ranging from $300 to $3000 via credit card in return for an ‘Immigration Package to Australia',' Senator Cash said.

'However, several users of AUSFIS's services have alleged that, once payment has been made, they either hear nothing further, or receive an email advising they are ineligible to apply for a visa.'

Where people have paid money by credit card to AUSFIS, or any other migration agency for a service they did not ultimately receive, they can contact their credit card provider and lodge a ‘disputed payment' grievance with them. The credit card provider may be able to retrieve all or part of the money paid.

'AUSFIS has no influence on visa decision-making and does not represent the Australian government,' Senator Cash said. 'The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has no record of visa applications lodged by AUSFIS and the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) does not list any registered migration agents connected with AUSFIS,' Senator Cash added.

Default Warning re fake DIBP website

Just issued by DIBP

Warning to avoid unauthorised departmental website

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has warned web users to be aware of an unauthorised website posing as an official departmental site.

The website, www. immigovau. co, mimics the departmental website in appearance and layout, particularly when using certain browsers.

A departmental spokesman said it was a well-camouflaged fake which should be avoided and that all Australian Government websites end with the country code gov.au.

“While there is no evidence that the department’s own web presence has been compromised, we advise web users who are looking for information on the department to make sure they visit the department’s official site at www.immi.gov.au,” the spokesman said.

“This issue is not unique to our department and is a common issue for companies and organisations which use websites to communicate information to their clients.”

DIBP said web users should ensure they had the www.immi.gov.au address in their browser when they were looking for information on the department to avoid this unauthorised website.

This could be raised with the Migration Institute of Australia or the Department of Immigration. Not clear if they're recruitment consultants but if existing 457 sponsors or purported migration agents then DIBP could do something.

Cheers,

Default Do Not Send PM's Asking Private Immigration Questions

Below is a duplicate of a 'Sticky thread' Rete posted in the USA Marriage Based Visas forum.

"It hasn't been posted in a while and I thought I would just give a shout that the moderators on the forum will not respond with answers to PM's asking for immigration assistance/advice/experience.

Please remember we are only laypeople and the information we respond with is information that we have either experienced ourselves or have gleamed through the postings of others and through reading various immigration information posted by professionals.

It is by only posting on an open forum that any incorrect information given be corrected. It is a safeguard in place to help you.

The forum's success depends on the postings of all its members and all of their experiences, big and small. It is hoped that you will avail yourselves of the wiki which is comprised of articles written by other members and by past threads dealing with some of the common questions.

It is further hoped that you will hang around and contribute your experiences so that others can learn from you as well.

Thanks for understanding."

Sydney migration agent jailed for fraud
Wednesday, 23 April 2014

The Federal Government said that the jailing of a former migration agent for immigration fraud sent a strong message to the industry that fraudulent and illegal behaviour will not be tolerated.

Ms Xiao Ying Wu (known as Amy Wu), was based in Sydney's Chinatown and pleaded guilty to forging immigration documents and defrauding her clients, who were seeking assistance with visa applications, in order to obtain more than $80 000.

She was sentenced today in the Downing Centre District Court to 21 months' imprisonment, with five months to be served, in relation to two Commonwealth charges of using false documents to obtain benefits.

She also received 18 months' imprisonment with five months' minimum term (to be served concurrently) for two charges under the NSW Crimes Act of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage.
