Default Dubai Offshore Sailing Club

I may be moving to Dubai in a couple of months time and would be interested in joining the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. I can see from some older posts that this is not that easy - long waiting lists, sailing CV and proposer need etc. etc. So, before I start on this, I was wondering if anyone knows what the membership fees are. They are not on their website and I am assuming that needing to ask means you can't afford it

I would primarily be a dingy sailor and don't have a boat the moment...but would probably get one once settled.

Any other club suggestions would be welcome!

May I suggest that you contact DOSC and ask them? http://www.dosc.ae/contact-us/

The membership secretary is a friend of mine, but you can't skip the queue.

The alternative is DIMC (proncounced dimsee) http://dimc.ae/

That's good to know! I just wasn't sure if it was one of those clubs that wouldn't relish questions on membership fees, some are incredibly snooty!

It can be a bit cliquey (can't every sailing club!) but not snooty.

No. They are very strict about that these days.

Shame as the F&B are pretty good and cheap. Non-members have to be signed in by members,

Jebel Ali yacht club. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Marina near Barasti. Literally forgotten and overlooked by almost everything around it.

Facilities are not as nice as at DOSC, downright rustic in fact due to a forced move a few years ago. But it is still a great place to drink cheap 20 aed coronas after a sail, sitting outside on the terrace/beach in front of the portable trailer doubling as a clubhouse, looking up at all the Marina towers. Cheap food and drinks. Great company. There's even a pool.

A single membership was about 4,000 for the year (I think, don't quote me). Have no idea as to the requirements or the waiting list but everyone there claimed to prefer it as it was more laid back than DOSC.

Whenever I see the sign for DOSC, I always wonder why they feel the need have "Offshore" in their name. Isn't it kind of a given that when they're sailing, their boats will be offshore...?

There is such a thing as inshore sailing, although not really here. Heard of lakes and resevoirs?

Exactly my point... unless someone can point me to all the reservoirs and other large bodies of inland water that are regularly used for sailing here, there isn't really much scope for confusion, hence the "offshore" in the title of the club seems somewhat redundant...
