Default I-864 Line 25 Question

Hi all,

I'm sponsoring a friend from the UK to live here. He doesn't live with me, and is not related, just a childhood friend.
I'm filing out the I-864 this morning, and have arrived at line 25.

I'm hoping to keep this simple and not involve my wife in the sponsorship process, although she doesn't disapprove at all.

Since my wife and I file jointly on our taxes, on the I-864, do I enter our joint adjusted gross income? Or do I enter just mine from my W-2?

Most of what I'm reading online talks in regards to the significant other being the immigrant, or someone else in the household. So I'm a little confused.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Hi Mark.

You're able to do it either way. If you use the amount from your joint tax return, your wife will need to complete an I-864a in addition to your I-864. If you choose to just use your income, you should include clear evidence of your personal income and probably a note to explain why the amount in the I-864 is different from the amount on the tax return.

What visa has your friend applied for? I assume some kind of Immediate Relative visa and you're acting as a Joint Sponsor for him since his sponsor doesn't meet the financial requirements?

I was going to ask the same thing. It sounds like the OP is a Joint Sponsor, since there is no immigrant visa available for the category of "childhood friend".

You can't sponsor a "childhood friend"

Are you acting as joint sponsor?

Ok then, that should work. I more than qualify with my income alone with all dependents according to the I-864P.

And yes, it appears I misspoke or even misunderstood, I will be a joint sponsor for the exact reason you stated.

Reading through the instructions, it seems I can include extra information on a separate sheet of paper.

Thanks for your quick response and everyone correcting me. I was wondering where that childhood friend checkbox was!?!?
