Mosel region
Hi everyone,
We planning a day trip to the Mosel (germany) region and will be
driving there from Frankfurt. Can anyone make some recommendations on
castles/wineries/restaurants? We have heard that Burg Eltz is a must,
but we would like to have a few back-ups just in case Eltz turns out
to be a turkey. Much appreciated.

Eltz won't turn out to be a turkey, it's my favorite castle in Germany.
Drive up the Rhine Gorge, or better yet, take a boat through it one day
while you are there. (A separate day)
For wine, ask the locals wherever you go what they recommend for wineries.
Bigger ones will be interesting, but it is the family ones that are really
fun.

Well, I remember hitting Cochem unexpectedly whilst hiking up the Moselle in
the 1950s. I swore blind that, whenever, I would spend my honeymoon there.
I didn't, and I haven't been back since, but it must have had something!

Bernkastel has a nice half-timbered market square - can be a bit
flooded with tourists, though.
Another village worth a look is Beilstein - one of the few not to have
been destroyed in the various wars which have ravaged the valley over
the years. Again, can be lots of people wandering around. The village
has been frequently used as a film location.
Just driving through the valley itself is pleasant, but do go up into
the neighbouring hills as well. The road from Ernst, dropping down to
Treis-Karden springs to mind. There are others.

I was thinking from Frankfurt, because the OP said they wanted to do a day
in the Mosel valley, and I was suggesting that they also consider the
Rhine.
That said I was not very clear, was I?

Cochem is a nice town to visit, but I can't recommend a specific
restaurant. You probably won't be disappointed by Burg Eltz- I wasn't,
but my partner wasn't as impressed- found it a bit too touristy. We
visited at a busy time of year (early October) and it was quite crowded.
I think it's impressive, though.
