Schools:

It really depends on the school you are looking at. There are several very good schools.

The best primary school in the country, without any shadow of a doubt, is the Hornbill School (British army); I have seen a lot of schools and it takes some beating, both facilities and academics. Their academic results back this up; look up their OFSTED reports. Many people who have visited from the "private" schools will support this. Unfortunately, you can't get in unless you are with the army. There is also Shell, ISB & JIS.

ISB & JIS for secondary/senior education. Both very good schools, pointless commenting on which is better, as it depends on what you look at.

Lifestyle:

Again it depends on you but I would say excellent if you like the out doors and know how to create your own fun. It is quiet, but this I consider one of Brunei's up sides.

Hi Joan,

How is it going, are you in Brunei? My husband is there and I will join him soon, sad to be leaving Edinburgh! Would love to connect with you! Will be living in Subok, Bandar, where are you?
Cheers,
Pamela

Hi Guys,
Husband and I with our 2 year old twins are probably relocating to Brunei in July. We are from Scotland. Any advice on Schooling, Playgroups. Is it that boring? We under stand its not going to be like major busy cities and that you have to make an effort, but will the little ones be happy? Thanks again.

Hi Robbie,

I have moved to Brunei from Edinburgh, have been here 4 months now and it is good! We don't have children but I know people who do, and they say they like it. It is easy to get around, easy-going. I find the people to be very polite. Yu can get most things here, but alcohol is very restricted. You can bring in some by going over the border into Malaysia, a bit of a hassle with paperwork but if it's something important to you, probably no big deal. I'm not much of a drinker but my Scottish husband likes a nip of whisky :-)
Do let me know if you want further info, and hope to meet you when you get here. Where will you guys be, in the city or in Kuala Belait? I don't know KB very well, it's an hour or so out of town, but they have a really good supermarket! :-)

Happy Burns Night to you!

Cheers for now,
Pamela

Hi Pamela,
Thanks for the reply. We have not decided on location yet. We presently live in Singapore and have another baby on the way. Do you know what the hospitals are like. I'm originally from gourock and it would be great to meet up.

Thanks again

Small world, my husband's family are in Gourock and Greenock! Meikle is their name.
The government hospital is just ok, but if you have private insurance, there is a great hospital here, with a very good cardiac centre, probably the best in the region. Also, a lot of people get specialised treatment in Sing.
Wow, I am not sure I would trade Singapore for Brunei, ha! So much more to do in Sing. On the other hand, Brunei is so easy to get around and it's quiet for the most part, which can be nice. What it lacks in big-city convenience, it makes up for in charm. It's nice to get into th big city every once in a while though, and luckily Sing is so close. Have you visited here yet? You must come over and see what you think.
Chat more soon :-)

Hi robbie100

I think that I have addressed some of your questions in previous posts; take a gander.

There are playgroups, depending where you are and a good network of families with young children.

It surprises me that you don't know your location yet, this would be dependent on your company and so should be already set? There cannot be that many places that you will be; and anyway Everywhere is within one hours drive.

This is a great place to bring up children, safe and friendly. The sun shines most of the time and so invest in sun screen, hats etc. We love the beach; get full rash suits. Get a house with a garden that does not flood and has no blocked storm drains next to it. Your house is critical. Invest in a pool (there is a steal on facebook at the moment but that will be gone by the time you are here and bargains depend on the time of the year and the groups coming and going). Put your kids outside and they will be in their element.

House and car: the two most important things. Do a lot of research and do not settle unless you are happy; it can be a minefield if you do not do your homework, but fine if you do.

If you like doing things as a family unit, and the outdoors you will be very happy; we are always busy but we do things together and like the outdoors. There is a lot to do but you need to seek it out. You can get virtually any product you want, but you have to seek it out! Advertising is not used much here; word of mouth and facebook. If you are into a night on the town, you will be bored I am afraid, but Miri is not far; there are also lots of social clubs and groups, which we don't use, but it keeps many people busy.

I agree with a lot of what Pamela says but I have to disagree with Pamela on two things (sorry Pamela).

Government hospitals are not just OK. We have used both our local clinic and hospital numerous times (and for some serious things). We have found the treatment and service excellent (this may vary around the country and department to department, but I don't know). Waiting times no different to anywhere else in the world. No faults that I have not seen elsewhere. Recently, after a small outbreak of JE, the ministry of health rolled out mass vaccination and it was carried out in an exemplary fashion by their staff, with jabs free for under 12 (including expat children) and “cost” price for adults; I know medicine and I was very impressed.

Most expats have health insurance but kids under 12 are free and, as stated, treatment for our kids has been great. Most expats get their kids covered anyway.

Regarding maternity specifically, I can't comment as we haven't used maternity, but pediatrics has been excellent. I know a couple of mums that have used maternity and have said that it was fine, but they were confident in themselves anyway. I believe that there is some local interest and surprise in the “to do” that some expat mums make in comparison to local mothers; this I hear second hand though and so cannot verify.

Obviously, this is very important to look into before you decide to come and so I would post on facebook for some more info from people that have used maternity (Brunei What's Up?? would be the best place). Just for your info, I have heard that there is little “bedside manner” difference between local and the private hospital from a friend that has used both, and your birthing options in comparison to the UK may not be as broad; again I cannot confirm. There was some discussion on facebook a couple of months back but I did not read it as it was not pertinent to us at the time. Be aware obviously of the normal fearful stories that you hear everywhere about this very natural process (childbirth I mean). You know the ropes anyway.

Regarding alcohol paperwork, it is no hassle at all. It takes about 2 minutes to fill in (literally) and customs are extremely friendly and easy going at the moment. Never had an issue so far.

Finally, good luck with your packing and I hope you have a stress free move.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies. We are moving to Brunei in the middle of May. It would be great to get our 2 year old involved in activities once we are there. AS of yet, we haven't decided on location. The hubby is working at the airport and any ideas on places to live or areas. We had a quick visit the other day but only had a chance to see a couple of house which looked nice but a bit isolated. Any suggestions would be great. We are heading over to Brunei on the 8th of march to have another look at properties and and schools. One last question, When the kids are at school, is there many options and things to do or places to go when hubby at Work.

Thanks again

I am new to this forum and I am hoping to find out some information about Brunei. It is likely that we will be relocating sometime this year and as previous posts suggest, it is difficult to find out practical information. I'd specifically be interested in finding out more about BSB; housing, facilities, nurseries and general lifestyle for a family. Any information would be welcomed. Thank you.

Hi there,
We have literally just moved here so it is all very very new for us so I am not sure how much help I can be. I thought I'd reply as it is difficult to find out about the place! I found the Watson blog on Brunei really useful and they were based in Jeroudong which is next to Bandar. We are based in KB Kuala Belait which is the other end of Brunei. We came here because it is great for families. Everyone we have met so far has been so so friendly as the Bruneins love children. The climate is great so far I thought I'd be dripping in sweat but I am not! It is just really warm, the sea is warm and people are out and about at night until late as a lovely temperature. Jeroudong school is excellent. The housing is of a good standard generally large. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck with everything. We know a good shipping company that only ships to Brunei.
Best wishes.

Thank you for replying so quickly! I hope that you are settling in well. I too followed the Watson blog which I found really helpful. The climate will take a bit of adjusting for us too, especially the little ones. I think that we will be using the nursery at the JIS, so it's encouraging to hear that it's good and also that Brunei is family friendly. Having just moved, I imagine that you will be busy but if there is any other information that you'd like to share I'd be grateful to hear from you. If I have any more specific questions as we approach our move I might post again. Thank you and best wishes in Brunei!
