does an L2 renewal need to be applied for at an embassy abroad -in particular London or can it be done somewhere closer ?

my wife doesnt want to have to travel back to London just for a stamp but i think she has to

Most prefer you use your own country ..tell her to treat it as a vacation

There are procedures for "TCN" applications at the border consulates. However, there are considerations in doing that. You do not give enough in the way of facts on your particular situation to discuss it. A legal consultation may be in order.

which is what I belive ray, the thing is she doesnt want to go back plus she has just started a new job.

Generally, any US consulate can process a visa renewal for TCNs - third country nationals. The major caveat, is that they are not obligated to do so... so you'll want to know before going. Note that if the visa expires while outside the US, well... that'll add a whole other layer of complication. There's 8 US consulates in Canada.

Email the Embassy in the Bahamas, they won't do initial applications but they do renewals and see if they will accept you. I got a response within 24 hours. Otherwise Toronto is a good bet.

you can file extension of status, whats wrong with that?
just means that if you want to travel outside of the U.S you must get your stamp at the embassy before going back into the U.S
