However life wasn't at all boring, though in the early days running for shelter when air-raid sirens sounded wasn't the best. Even got shot at by a Low flying German plane, so didn't need a box for drama.

Blue Peter for me too (especially when the presenters were Valerie Singleton, Peter Purves (I liked his German Shepherd dog, Petra) and of course John Noakes and his boisterous Welsh sheepdog 'Shep' ("Get down, Shep!") lol!
I also liked Jackanory and Crackerjack....as I got older I even enjoyed 'Tomorrow's World' with Raymond Baxter.
Can anyone remember watching TV as part of a school lesson? We used to watch some programmes from a series called 'Picturebox' (I think that's what it was called, there used to be an antique-looking metal and glass container like a jewellery box which would be spinning at the beginning of the programme. I can still recall the face of the presenter but I don't know his name. (Now I want to try and look it up lol!)
Aha - found it!

Re: Favourite childhood British Tv show
In the school holidays they always seemed to transmit a Yugoslavian TV series called "White Horses" - which was badly dubbed lol! I was mad on ponies so always liked to watch anything to do with them, such as 'Black Beauty' and 'Follyfoot'.
Can anyone remember 'Skippy' (the bush kangaroo). I had a surreal evening about a year ago when I was in the US and flicking through the channels and came across an episode of 'Skippy' - and really enjoyed it
Also we used to watch 'Daktari' (set somewhere in Africa) with Clarence the cross-eyed lion.
My siblings and I also used to go to the cinema on a Saturday morning where they showed the British movies from the 'Children's Film Foundation', although some of them were quite old. I loved the film about the children who found a man in a barn (I think he was on the run from the police, he may have been under suspicion of murder?) and they thought he was Jesus! I think it was 'Whistle Down the Wind'
I also loved 'The Railway Children' (original version), 'Oliver!' and the BBC TV production of 'The Secret Garden'. Oddly enough my daughter also loves these films, my son not so much.
Just found this list of the top 50 films for children of all time:
