Don't be too put off by shrimp paste. If you've never had it before, then it's not what you think. It is fermented and they generally only put a teeny bit in dishes. It doesn't smell of shrimps. It's not the same as British shrimp paste...totally different.

Sorry weenocks for the late reply.I didn't receive any notification.
Anyway good to hear that your getting aclimatised to Ipoh.
My wife gave birth 3 wks ago so I'm being kept busy.Well not too busy for a pint
Your husband is right about the driving but its tame compared to the kamikazi driving in KL.
Let me know when your husband is free and we can meet up.

Thanks bakedbean. It is only as I am a strict veggie I wouldn't eat anything with shrimps in. Not the smell as such. I was a vegan for some time so it can be quite limiting when eating out. I hear there is a lot of pure veggie places to eat I am hoping that is true. thanks for the reply.

I had to go to Ipoh for a course a couple of weeks ago, found the Healy Mac's for a few beers and a good meal. Other than that I found it pretty quiet.

Hi there, are you still in Ipoh, did you stay? are you happy?
I ask because me and my wife will be moving there in August 2015 and wondered if you would be willing to share in your experience with us, we are trying to find ex pats who live there currently and can help us with some insights.
please reply

^ Ipoh is in between Penang & KL. If you feel bored, it's just 1 1/2 hours drive to Penang or KL

Finally another expat will be in ipoh. I tried to contact weenocks, no reply. Perhaps their plans changed.
Ipoh is in a good spot. 2hrs from KL, 1hr 45 it's from penang and can reach Thai border in 3-4hrs.
Cameron Highlands is an hour away and is 10c cooler.
Much less traffic than KL and penang which is very frustrating.

surely Lacmac we cant be the only ones? really....after reading the lonely planet book a little more and slower this time, i feel that the location of Ipoh is superb as a base to explore whether your going north south or across the country east. a great base for sure - Mayflower car leasing is used i believe by the school and its about 50MR per day 1500 approx per month....expesive yes but crucial also.

Sorry but it seems so. I've only seen retired guys or tourists.
But ipoh has everything you need and is steadily growing.
