I've often found that gadgets and electronics are more expensive here when they are new on the market.

A few years ago I wanted to buy a digital photo frame for the Nonni. In the shops here I could only find Kodak or Philips or another big name like Samsung or something and they were all around the 100 euro mark. I ended up getting one from some UK website that was about 39 quid and also played video files and music files and not just photos.

Yes but this is for the same product, that also happens to cost 739 Euro in France and Germany. More expensive than the UK but still cheaper than Italy.

Other examples are CDs, DVDs, Video games and the PS3 160gb console. These are just items I was checking. I'm sure there are also many items that cost less here in Italy than in the UK (wine, fruit and veg, coffee at bars, what else apart from house prices?) but on the whole, whatever it is, I find myself checking the price of the product I'd like to purchase here in Italy and compare it to the UK and 9 times out of 10 it will be cheaper in the UK.

I got a games console for the kids. The console and the games were all cheaper in the UK - for the exact same product, so yes - I check out both prices as well.

Come December will have been in Italy 50 years, apart from a short post-earthquake break in UK early 80's. In all that time have always bought my electrical consumer stuff in UK; except when we used saved up milk coupons for things like food mixers, toasters, coffee machine. Electric blankets, electric kettles, transistor radios, mobile phones, cameras, laptops etc etc all brought from UK during business/FVR trips.
Need a new laptop, but aint paying the silly prices in Euronics et al. Trouble is can't travel to UK any more. And I'm old fashioned. Only buy stuff I can see/touch/feel. May have to rely on no. 2 and 3 sons, who are visiting London in November.
ciao for now,

homeandgardens will become famous soon enough
Default Re: Rip off Italia

When I moved to Italy in Feb this year I brought back several electrical appliances which I knew were quite expensive here + three bicycles: an old red postman I really love, a foldable brompton and an old blu touring raleigh. There is definitely a difference in price for some articles. I also find amazon UK offers more choice and the shipping cost isn't that bad.

Most of our white goods were bought from Germany.
I remember saving 700 euro on a Liebherr fridge, even with paying 70 euro delivery.
OH always gets mobile phones and computers from the UK, while I get clothes and shoes for the kids. Shopping here is no fun anyway.......
