A government whose only real policy was stop the boats though would find it hard to go back to nothing.
Thumbs down big time.

Ok. Withdraw from UNHCR then and be honest about it. Hardly does the burden lay in the west. You know how many refugees are in Jordon, Lebanon, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Malaysia, to name a few. Far more than in the West. Absolute nonsense spoken on this issue.

I wonder if you wrote that and thought about posting it for a few minutes before hitting the button.
Helping fellow human beings isn't about attending to our guilt. We should help because we have the means to help. Australia and the west waste a disgusting amount of money to give ourselves a very comfortable living. I'm not suggesting that we need to overhaul our principles and beliefs, but we can acknowlegde that we can always do more. I think it's better to try and do that than pretend we're saving lives by putting our hand up and saying 'go away'.
This argument will continue and the best policy won't be considered because of the political agenda that is far more important to power crazy politicians.

Yes we have the means to help. So do we fill the country with every waif, stray and opportunist who decides to rock up until the place is as broken and unpleasant as the countries these people have fled from? Is there a point when we must say "***k off we're full" or do we just keep letting them in until the appeal to settle here no longer exists?

I don't see appealing to the Bogan vote as anything to be proud of. It is for government to rise about the narrow minded populist vote and lead.

So are these counties accepting the refugees into their populations or are they simply hosting the tent camps? Who is tenting and feeding them?

What? As opposed to those who dump their thoughts to text and hit "Submit Reply" button without a moments thought - not even to spell check?

You seem to be more concerned about the boat people arriving than the people arriving on plane as if they will hold an asylum grant with much more respect and decency than anyone on a boat would.
What is the number that would make Australia full?

I'm beginning to see alarming levels of racism in your posts. Maybe I'm reading them wrong. We need to process asylum applications from these boat arrivals. Everyone of them should have a right to apply and be heard. Currently they have no means of doing that. We don't need to accept every one of their applications but we do need to do more than send them home.

That doesn't sound very honest or democratic. Are you suggesting that governments should not implement the policy platforms they were elected to implement?

A figure of 25,000 is certainly within capacity. And no it wouldn't become another Durban.

Is this a bad thing?

The policy, I believe was to stop the boats. They are still coming but are being diverted. Boats wouldn't have got to Australia under the last policy change under the Rudd government as they would have been intercepted and not processed in Australia. This new policy doesn't include the human rights responsibility that the last one did. It ignores it.

Nope, it's a very good thing for two key reasons: Australia is seizing control of it's borders back from the people smugglers and ending the tragic losses of life that were taking place on the high seas.
