Default Having a baby in Oz

Hi
I am in the process of moving to Australia with my husband. We will be coming on my husbands visa as he will be becoming a partner in a well known company. I am a teacher although do not have a job in Australia yet but wish to continue my career.

I am now of an age that I want to start a family as soon as we get to Australia as I'm not getting any younger and have already put this off till the move is complete.

I am concerned about whether we could afford to have a baby and if I would be entitled to any government help being British?

Any guidance, advice and help would be greatly welcome.

I think - Australian State Sponsored Visa: Skilled - Nominated Visa (subclass 190) as the company are sorting it out. Will have to check with my husband!

The employing company would have no involvement with a 190 visa, this is not related to employment. You really need to verify what visa it is, particularly if it is temporary or permanent.

Being British - simple answer, no you won't be eligible for any government help from a foreign government. You really need to be crystal clear on the visa you will be coming on - makes a heck of a difference. There is a reciprocal medical arrangement but it won't cover everything necessarily (if you aren't permanent residents) and you would be wise to get private health cover well ahead of getting pregnant.

As for bring a teacher - don't hold your breath! Check first that you will be eligible to be registered as a teacher (4yr university) and then, unless you are secondary maths/science don't expect to get a permanent position. Now might be a good time to change career!

Definitely need to confirm your visa. If you are a permanent resident and go through the public health system, then apart from the cost of some scans there should be no charges for having a baby here.

Also as a PR you may be eligible for some government benefits depending on your husband's wage x

Your visa status is relevant. Your nationality is irrelevant.

If it is any help, many ex British residents on 457 temporary visas have posted that after getting pregnant in Australia almost all costs have been covered by medicare when using the public hospital system.

The other issue to bear in mind is that if the parents have temporary visas, the child (born in Australia) will not be an Australian citizen.

That would only matter if the poster assumed it was a shortcut to their own citizenship..... Right?

Other than that, I'd assume the baby goes where the parents go.

Even when there is not a long term intention to stay in Australia, a lot of parents (on temporary visas) assume that their child is a citizen by birth. And are surprised when the application for an Australian passport or citizenship certificate is refused.

It would be worthwhile to verify that the child will be entitled to obtain least one citizenship from the parents. Usually this is the case - but not always. And having to deal with a child being stateless is a complication that is normally best avoided.

Family Tax Benefit, is the main exception to the 2 year no benefits clause.

The Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) is a permanent residence visa, and therefore you would be entitled to Family Tax Benefit, but this is means tested on family income. It is designed to help those families that need financial assistance.

What rubbish. Means testing. Why should those putting less in get more back? What a crock.

It is a welfare society. The masses contribute to help those less fortunate, in times of need. Same as in most western countries.

Some would ask why those on A$200,000 per year feel that they NEED welfare payments
